150 choices and still not quite right
I'm busy selecting songs for Youngest's Brownie troop to sing on Saturday at our town's annual holiday shop. We'll be on stage for about 30 minutes, singing traditional Christmas songs. Do you know just how hard it is to find a version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" that isn't weird? Every "artist" puts their own spin on the song but it's such a pain in the ASS for little kids to sing. There are 150 versions of "Santa Claus". Seriously. Go look on iTunes if you don't believe me.
December 3rd and I'm stressing over Christmas songs! GAH!

Girl Scouts
This is Eldest's Junior vest.
She worked quite hard to earn all the badges on the front of the vest. Since I am the troop leader..ahhem.. I mean.. mentor.. I felt it very important that she bust her butt twice as hardas the other girls. She did earn a few badges on her own but, for the most part, all of those badges represent three years worth of meetings.
As you can see, our troop has been quite busy.
This is the back of her Junior vest.
All those patches are called "fun patches". Whenever we'd go on a trip, do a fun activity, sell nuts and cookies, or even some community service work, I would pick up a fun patch. I stopped buying fun patches last year as the girls vests started filling up and the patches were costing us quite a bit of money.
The girls bridged to Cadette level in May so we get to start all over again with a new vest. It looks so empty - with nothing on it but an insignia tab and a couple earned IPAs
I know a lot of people have problems with Girl Scouts. I do believe that it is a great organization and, unfortunately, there are people who experience bad situations. At the most basic level, it is completely volunteer-run. I know myself, while running two troops, that it is difficult to balance everything and provide a decent program for the girls. I think that's what a lot of people forget - it's for the girls. Not the moms.. not the dads.. not the leaders. The girls. I've had a few uncomfortable moments as a leader when dealing with parents and even other leaders. That just sucks.
Luckily, for the most part, I do enjoy running Eldest's troop - the girls are all 7th grade and want to be part of it. Some girls I've had since Kindergarten!! It's incredible to see how much they've grown.. especially since most of them are taller than me! I've had soem difficult moments but the parents are great and very supportive.
I can't ask for more than that.

Merry Go Round
Youmgest's Girl Scout troop visited Fantasy Island tonight, spending the last bit of their cookie sale money. Everyone had a great time and the park was just the right size for the girls.
Tomorrow, the girls and I are off to Jenkinsons. We'll be hanging with my stepmom, sis in law, and my ten month old nephew. I hear the weather will be fabulous.
Tilt-A-Whirl, here I come!

The Schedule
I've been sitting at my desk for over an hour, trying to work out my two Girl Scout troops' trip schedules. Of course, a lot of the activities for the Brownie or Junior troop are actually on the same day, which totally sucks for me. I don't have an assistant for my Junior troop so it's just me. We only have 8 girls in the troop. I might start to have meetings at my house if it gets any smaller! Now, my Brownie troop - I've got 13 girls. They are so good, in fact, sometimes they are better behaved than my Junior troop.
I'm getting frustrated with all the conflicting events offered by our Council and all the activities offered locally. Arrgghh! I need to clone myself!
:::deep breath:::
Ok, I feel a little better now. I've got to call all my Brownie moms tomorrow and try to hook up with them for some start up money and to beg for a cookie mom. Wish me luck!

Holy Crap!
Bear tries to pull N.J. Girl Scout from tent at Pa. camp
::link::
An 11-year-old New Jersey Girl Scout got a rude awakening early Sunday when a bear tried to pull her out of her tent at a campground in the Poconos.
Celeste Tietz of Franklin Township, Warren County, managed to grab a tent-support pole and slide out of her sleeping bag as the bear was tugging at it. Tietz and four other girls slept in bags on cots.
"I was sleeping and I woke up because I fell on the floor," Tietz said. "Then something started pulling me towards the front of my tent and tried to pull me out."
After Tietz slid out of the sleeping bag, she jumped into a fellow Scout's cot and the girls started screaming for help. Tietz's mother, Cathy, and other Scout leaders said the bear then moseyed around their campsite, approaching other tents.
The Scout leaders were able to load the campers, about 15 of them, into a van and took them to the camp's mess hall. "It was a scary situation," troop leader Terri DeTore said.
Shortly after midnight before the 11-year-old's bear encounter, DeTore said she heard a ruckus coming from a neighboring camp site.
Because of the bear encounter, Camp Mosey Wood in White Haven, Luzerne County, has been closed to tent campers for the next two weekends, according to Ann Meredith, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.
"Everybody will be using cabins and there will be no outside cooking," Meredith said.
Bears can be attracted to camp areas by food, toothpaste and, as Meredith put it, "pretty-smelling shampoo." Campers and Scout leaders receive education and warnings about bears when they register for camp. Bear warnings are also posted.
"Bears are a fact of life," Meredith said. "We're living in their habitat."
Cathy Tietz said there was no food out at her camp before the Sunday morning incident.
Meredith said a warden with the Pennsylvania Game Commission set a bear trap at the camp. A message left for game commission officials was not returned.
Camp officials also are reviewing emergency procedures.
"We'll use this as an opportunity to further educate Girl Scouts about bear safety," Meredith said.

It fucking figures
I've been planning this trip to upstate NY with Eldest's troop for over a year. A YEAR.. Well, today, we are having a pretty bad rainy day - it rains hard for 20 minutes.. stops for 10, then starts to drizzle again.
I arranged to have both girls dismissed early and picked them both up from school. When I pulled ino our driveway, around 1pm, it had just started to rain harder so we all jumped out of the car and raced up to the front door. As I quickly stepped up onto my front porch, I felt my left foot slip and twist as I fell off my porch.
Fell OFF my porch.
Thank you God - I fell in the ONE place that was totally safe to land. BUT, my poor ankle, well, that's not doing so well. Did I mentio that the troop and I are leaving at 4pm today?
I think I scared the crap out of the girls because after I fell, I just lay there on the ground, fighting the urge to vomit from the pain. I had broken out into a cold sweat while trying to get up and all I kept saying was "please don't be broken. Please don't be broken."
It's not broken - just badly sprained. Did I also mention that I was planning on going horseback riding too? Yeah, we'll see what happens tomorrow. Looks like I will be riding in the back of my friend's Yukon and will have the whole seat for me and my big bag of ice. Thank goodness my Mom was able to come over right away and Husband was just leaving work early to help us out and drive Eldest and I to our meeting spot.
God, I am so pathetic.
I'm going on the trip. I can stand on my leg but I will be using a cane to walk. Christ almighty... I don't need this today!!
Wish me luck - I'm going to need it!

Pooped!
The girls and I walked about a mile today, selling Girl Scout cookies. The girls alternated houses in order to sort of even up the sales. It turned out pretty good with Youngestselling, so far, 81 boxes and Eldest is up to 90. We've got more walking and selling to do tomorrow.
After we got back from walking, the kids scarfed down lunch and headed out for other activities. Youngesthad a birthday party to attend and Eldest is learning how to sew with my Mom. Eldest is doing quite well with sewing and is really enjoying it. Youngest(and I) had a nice time at the birthday party.
Now, we are vegging out watching Men In Black II. I love Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. I can't wait for bed!

Thinking Day 2007
This year, my Junior troop and I participated in an international postcard exchange. My girls have had so much fun sending and receiving postcards from the USA as well as Europe, Africa, and Asia. Our local Service Unit is also celebrating World Thinking Day by having an International Night. There will be roughly 300 girls attending. My 2nd year Junior troop chose to represent China and my 1st year Brownie troop is representing the United States of America.
I can't wait for this event!

Girl Scouting
Lots of GS stuff going on in my house. The cookie sale will be starting on Friday and, this year, BOTH girls will be selling cookies. Talk about competition! They both want the bigger prize which is a stuffed bunny ::View image:: Kinda cute, isn't it? Plus, Youngest's troop wants to go to Build A Bear with their cookie money. Eldest's troop is going to a dude ranch in April for horseback riding and an amazing amount of absolutely astonishing activities! Heh.
Since I am lucky enough to be the leader for both troops, I get to do both! I really want a Build A Bear of my own. The girls have several and, every time we go there, I just want to make one *just for me*. I need another stuffed animal in this house like I need a hole in my head. But, they are so darn cute!
My house is pretty messy and I've still got to get some food into this house AND take Miss O to the pedi. I wish I could afford a housekeeper but I'd be to embarrassed to have her come in and clean! I'd be cleaning for the housekeeper! Actually, I need this person! (image from here).
I think every family needs an Alice, don't you?

Girl Scout updates
Yep - we're still doing Girl Scouts in this house.
Every year, the local hospital has a "Lights of Life" event. This is a community-wide event that helps our community usher in the holidays. Thousands of the Foundation’s friends have placed their special gifts on the hospital's holiday tree in honor, in memory or in thanksgiving for loved ones. These special gifts include ornamental angels, doves, bells, and stars in addition to the thousands of lights on the beautiful 25-foot spruce planted in the new Memorial Arboretum on the hospital campus.
I volunteered our two troops to decorate one of the smaller trees last year. We were asked to come back this year. So, yesterday, I decorated the tree with ornaments the younger troop made and I picked up a few small things from Wal*Mart. The tree looks adorable. I hope the weather cooperates for the tree lighting. Last year's lighting was awful. It had to have been 20 degrees and cold. C O L D!! I did find some of those little hand heater packs for the girls, just in case.
I've got to head up to council and buy badges and patches. Catch you later!

CEO makes up with Girl Scout troop
(follow up to this story)
LA Weight Loss CEO Vahan Karian bought $2,000 worth of Girl Scout cookies on Tuesday to apologize to a troop that was shooed away from selling the goodies near a Raritan weight-loss center.
On Friday night, some LA Weight Loss clients were upset about Girl Scouts from Troop 1065 in Bridgewater selling cookies in front of the neighboring Blockbuster video store. Both are in the same shopping center.
The weight-loss center contacted Blockbuster, asking the store to make the girls leave. They agreed to move and to stagger their selling hours.

Nutty Day
Today is our Service Unit's Nut Depot (Girl Scouts). Of course, the one year that I arrange to pick up the order for the Brownie troop (nut mom is in Disney with half of our school district), it's raining. No, not raining, POURING.
Damnit.
I will be bringing the girls long with me to help carry boxes. I've got another mom who said she'd help too. So, between the two of us and the combined amount of four children, it should take approximately a week to load up all those boxes. I kid. I've been delaying to go outside and clean out the back of my Hyundai. I've got SO much crap stored in it. There's no way I'd be able to load anything else in there. So, heading out to dodge the raindrops and clean out my car.
I've got to update later and share my adventures at Lenscrafters yesterday. Oy.

Scouts
I had an apoointment set up this morning to interview wo women who wanted to become Girl Scout leaders. I had to bring the girls with me, which was no problem. We get to the house and everyone is introduced to each other. The girls run off while Eldest chooses to sit and read a book. There were approxiamtely seven girls present, ranging in ages from five to seven with Eldest being the eldest at ten.
Let me tell you that I was shocked at the behavior of one particular child. She was, of course, the daughter of one of the women I was interviewing. Of course, it was her own home too. Anyway, this six year old girl had the entire house in an uproar. "I WANT this" and "It's MINE" were just a few of the phrases I would overhear. This child was freaking out and, literally, screaming in rage. She wasn't screaming words, she was just screaming. At this point, I couldn't leave fast enough.
When the girls and I got outside, we were all just sort of speechless. Youngestjust said "Wow" and Eldest agreed with "Yep".
Yep indeed.

Another one bites the dust
Woohoo!
We just had our last Junior Girl Scout meeting today. Man, I really do love end of the year parties! Actually, we didn't really have a party, just had a quiet meeting. It was nice. I can't believe all my girls will be heading into FIFTH grade! FIFTH! I remember when they were all five years old and in kindergarten ::sniffle:: My babies.
Tomorrow, the girls and I will be attending our town's Founders Day celebration. There's a parade, some blow up jumpy thingies (my offical name for them - lol), pony rides (PONIES!) and just some good old fun. We will be meeting up with a friend of mine and her two daughters who, coincidentially, get along fabulously with my two girls. That's awesome.
Life is starting to calm down around the Katespot household... and I like it. A lot.

One troop down.... one to go
Today was Youngest's last Daisy meeting. WOOOHOO! I've had fun with the girls but I think I have earned a well needed rest! If I had any beer or wine in the house, I'de certainly would have had a drink tonight.
I had a whole entry typed up but wiped it out in one fell swoop. God, that pisses me off!
I'm going to go out and sit with Husband, have a cup of tea, and watch some Season 1 episodes of House. ROWR! Hugh Laurie is HOT! He's my new boyfriend, remember?
I mean - just LOOK at him!

::::sigh:::: Those are some baby blues...

Good throughts
Tonight, Eldest and I will be spending the evening at the local community center with her Girl Scout troop. We are having an overnight "Troop Fun Night". We're going to cook, make dessert, have a pj fashion show, sing karaoke, all kinds of goofy stuff for nine and ten year old girls. I will also have a craft station for them as well register them for next year's scout year.
Wish me luck and I hope I can get a little bot of sleep!

Preparation
Eldest and I are going on a bus trip to NYC tomorrow. We are going to visit the American Girl store, have lunch there AND see a show in the American Girl theater.
Oh yes - it's VERY La-Dee-Dah.
The trip was organized by the GS service unit manager and she busted her ass putting this trip together. When I spoke with her this afternoon, she was SO burned out from all the planning just for this trip. This woman not only runs her GS troop, she's in charge of 55 additional troops, teaches CCD, AND manages to holds a job with the school. She's my hero.
Anyway, I've been shopping, doing laundry, and getting things set for Husband and Olivia. I think they might be having a nice Dad/Daughter kind of day. Earlier this morning, Husband had an endoscopy procedure done and it looks like his ulcer is healing. Hooray! I think he's still got to be careful but ::knocking wood:: I hope he's going to be ok.
I've seriously neglected my blog buddies. Sorry guys! I'll be visiting soon! Now, it's off to do more laundry. G'night!

US Troop Rally
I just found out from a GS leader that there will be Ocean County National Guard troops returning home today. There will be a Welcome Home Rally this afternoon starting at 330pm. So, if you are going to be in the Toms River area, make sure you stop at the Ritacco Center on Old Freehold Road. The girls and I will be going with our small handheld flags and my camera.

Scouting for Food
A few of my girls from the Daisy and Junior troop assisted the Boy Scouts today by distributing bags for the Boy Scouts annual "Scouting for Food" drive. My girls probably dropped bags at roughly 200 houses. We will also be helping pick up the bags next week when filled bags are left out for us. Then, after we pick up all the bags, we will be bringing them to one of two local food banks in our town. I hope we have a good response! Please, if you received one of those bags, leave something out to help the needy familes in your area.
Thanks!

Help the Girl Scouts in Baton Rouge
Girl Scouts Helping Girl Scouts
Your troop, with assistance from MakingFriends.com, can directly help the Girl Scouts who have been evacuated due to the devastation caused by Katrina.
This information is taken directly form the GSUSA website:
Girl Scouts-Audubon Council in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where more than 32 shelters and temporary housing communities are housing evacuees, has several specific requests: for "Badge in a Bag" kits (bags or boxes with all of the information and materials, such as paper, scissors, glue, etc., needed to complete a badge or try-it for 25 girls).
Please help us to fill this need.
For every "Badge in a Bag" purchased by participating troops, MakingFriends.com will match the donation and send the "bags" directly to the Baton Rouge Council.
We will also include a customized card with your message and stamped, addressed thank you card so it's easier for the girls to write you back.
Just choose the level you would like to help and begin shopping:

Girl Scouts and Food Allergies
I know that a *lot* of my readers lurk (I see you!) but I was hoping that someone might be able to offer some suggestions.
My five year old, in case anyone didn't know, has major food allergies. Nuts, peanuts, fish, dairy, and eggs are the big ones and she can have an anaphylactic reaction if she does ingest any of those items. I am her Daisy scout leader this year and I was wondering how other parents and troop leaders run meetings and have their child participate in events where there could be a life threatening problem. I think I have snack time covered but I am always up for new suggestions.
Please, I don't want any debates about how it's your child's right to eat peanut butter in school. I am just asking for some assistance. Thanks. : - )

Daisy Day
I've got a parent meeting for all my Daisy troop parents today at 1030am. I just hope the weather holds out. I know I've got eleven girls in this troop and I am hoping to rope in a parent or two as additional assistants. My friend Liz is an assistant and so far, it's just the two of us. But, the bonus to running a Junior troop is using some of those girls for help as well. In fact, they can earn their Junior Aide awards.
I fear that I have a bit too much on my plate this year. I will need to be very organized and really on top of my game. I'm actually a little nervous about it all but I think (I hope!) that everything will turn out just fine.
I'm already looking forward to June!

Girl Scoutin'
It's been one crazy thing after another. I was, literally, working on GS stuff (two troops and doing the organizer stuff) for several hours today. Plus, in about thirty minutes, I have a parent meeting with all the parents in Eldest's troop. I just got five new girls, bringing this troop's total up to 17.
Oy!
I'm off to get set up for my meeting. You all behave, y'hear?

I've got an interview this evening for a potential Girl Scout assistant and another one Tuesday evening. I've got to finish up my end of year financial paperwork too plus get the rest of the troop signed up for next year. I need a dang secretary to keep up with this stuff PLUS making sure the house and children are also taken care of properly.
Hell - I need a wife!

Lots of fun
The girls had SO much fun touring the police station. The officer who showed us is one of the DARE officers who visits the classrooms. We were even able to place the girls in a holding cell. Heh - they didn't like that too much, especially when the door was closed with a rather loud sounding "CLANG".
Husband brought Eldest to the diner for s special Dad and daughter night. She's really been missing him lately. He works 40 hours a week, goes to school 2-3 nights a week abd then working around the house on the weekends. I think she needed some Daddy time. Youngestand I visited McD's (her choice). I had promised that she could play on the jungle gym after she ate her dinner. Needless to say, she scarfed it down.
She's heading for the tub now because of all the pollen just covering the jungle gym. Ugh. It was disgusting. Husband has Eldest mowing the lawn.
Oh yeah.

Mothers Day Craft
I stopped at Michaels this afternoon and picked up stuff for the girls in the troop to make for Mothers Day. I bought paper boxes and jewels for decorating the lids. I also have ribbons, buttons, and tons of other little trinkets that can be used.
I have been just sitting here, gazing at all this blank space on my screen. What the hell am I going to write about now? Am I going through the "blogger burnout"? I think I've got so much on my plate right now that everything is just, I dunno, right here. Veryveryclose.
Meh. I think I need to go to sleep! G'night all!

Cd
I just burned a cd to play at our Girl Scout dance tomorrow. Here are the songs: View image
A HUGE thank you to Vito who came through with a copy of Cotton Eye Joe for me at the last minute. The girls love this song. I had a lot of fun putting the songs together. I hope they like it!
I got my oil changed this morning. Well, the CAR'S oil anyhow ::grin:: Heck, I even washed the damn thing too. I don't drive it in because I love using the powerwasher myself. I forgot that one must be aware of the wind and which way it is blowing or one could end up with a face full of water as well as wet jeans and shoes. That's happened to you guys too, right? RIGHT?
Youngest's got a buddy over so I am going to try to get some stuff done - laundry, dishes, all that fun crap!

Home again
Eldest had her after-school program today until 430pm. Youngestand I picked her up and then we rushed back home to eat dinner. I had to go to my service unit manager's house for some Girl Scout paperwork and discuss awards. The girls and I got there by 6pm and we didn't get home until 740pm. The service unit manager had a dog and Youngestgot itchy. It doesn't take too much to make the poor child itch and cough. I had to put Youngestin the shower right away and have her take her medicine as soon as she was dried and dressed. She's still slightly itchy and she has some small bumps/hives in her face.
I've got to finish getting the girls ready for bed.

I'm trying to get caught up on my troop paperwork. Man - I knew I should have done better these past few months. Eeek. Cookie Hell
I got to the cookie depot a little early. I knew there was going to be problems when I saw the big 18 wheeler at the fire house with three guys unloading the truck. The truck arrived at 8am and these guys were moving s l o w or, as one of the volunteers said "like molasses moving uphill in January". The volunteers are not permitted to unload the truck. Finally, at one point, all the volunteers must have said screw this and all these women with hand trucks just swarmed the truck. They had that damn thing unloaded within the hour. So, our 1215pm cookie pick-up was delayed back until 120pm. Can you say "unhappy"? I knew you could. Let me tell you there were some very pissed off cookie moms. We managed to get all of our troop's cookies stuffed into our cookie mom's big van within 20 minutes. Youngestand I didn't get home until 2pm. We were hungry, cold and tired.
So, Eldest is home from school and working on homework. Dinner tonight is going to be open faced sandwiches with gravy, salad and tater tots. Mmmm - I love tater tots.
I've got to get moving but all I want to do is lay on the couch and take a nap!

Cookie Sales
Eldest has done pretty good with selling cookies. It's been very difficult to sell cookies when there's a ton of snow on the ground and it's freezing cold outside. But, we just bundle up and walk up and down the street. I want to take her on some other streets. Hopefully, we can get a few houses done today and tomorrow.
I got a phone call from my neighbor telling me that her mom is looking for Girl Scout cookies. Her mom works at Pathmark. I called her and she suggested that I bring in the cookie form and leave it with her for a few days. Woohoo! I hope she can score a few more sales this way.
Husband and I have been trying to come up with a working solution for an addition. Good lord - it's hard to plan out what would be the best layout for us. We are on a budget. We saw an ad for a guy who will do plans, get permits, pour the slab, build the shell, frame, siding, roofing, windows, doors and we would be doing a lot of our own work - insulation, sheetrock, flooring, painting. Such fun! I wasn't looking forward to working on the roof again. Husband and I already replaced the roof the summer we moved into the house. Yes - yours truly was up on the roof, ripping off the old shingles, tapping down all the original nails before nailing down tar paper and shingles. Husband took few pictures of me up on the roof. Door to Door
The girls and I sold some cookies today. We only hit our street because it was freezing cold! Oogy! Husband had the day off today for Eldest's parent/teacher conference. The teacher adores her. Eldest scored top marks all across the board. ::sniffle:: My baby's so smart!
I'd write more but I'm on DIAL UP. Boo.Hiss.Cry.

Caroling was fun today. The girls had a good time and even managed to score candy goody bags for helping out.
Now we are off to the local roller rink for a birthday party.

Accepting help
I have finally come to the conclusion that I have lost control of some GS paperwork. The paperwork to place all girls who want to be a Brownie. ::sigh:: This past month has been a nightmare. I haven't gotten much of it done. Hell - I've barely managed to keep my own troop going. I hate this. So, the woman who is in charge of all the troops in my town called me and offered to finish it for me. I almost cried - it's not like she isn't doing anything either. I hate hate not being able to finish a job... I feel like I let her down... I let down the girls who want to be in scouts.

Scouts
I've been planning things to do for tomorrow's meeting. Printing, cutting and pasting, making permission slips.. oy.. it's never ending! And, to be 100% truthful, I love doing it. I know my former troop leader would be so proud of me.
I'm feeling better now. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to send me your kind thoughts. {{{hugs}}}

Interview
I have an interview a mom in an hour. She wants to be an assistant troop leader. I am going to her house for the interview. When I called her last week to set up an appointment, we got to chatting. Turns out her husband had his tonsils out too - like P. I will chat with her today and find out how he is doing.
Gotta run!

Fun
Last night's award ceremony was fun. The dinner was delicious too!
But...
I missed The Sopranos.
Not only that, I missed Deadwood too.
I can't go to anybody's website who watched either one of these shows! I don't want to know what happened until *I* see the show.
If you don't see me around, that's why.
I will miss you all ::sniffle::

Today is our final Girl Scout meeting. I'm goning to miss some of those little boogers.. SOME of them. I am bringing in a Twister game and we are also going to play Girl Scout charades using the badges the troop has earned and trips we have done as the answers.
I hope this works!

Meeting Day
We are having a regular meeting today. I am hoping that some of the parents come early to fill out the registration forms for next year. It would make my life much easier! Of course, I don't have much of anything planned for this meeting or our last meeting (June 4th). I think we will have a troop party for the last meeting...I love parties!
See ya later!

Final Meeting
I had my final GS service unit meeting tonight. I managed to volunteer to be a Brownie Organizer for next year. It should be fun and I will be able to place girls in troops when they sign up for scouts. Also, I get to try to recruit parents to become leaders, assistants, etc... Oh.. and of course I am going to be troop leader for next year as well!
I can't wait!

I rock
I just organized a Girl Scout trip to the movies to see Shrek 2. Then, after the movie is over, I will be taking them all out for ice cream. It's good to be a scout in my troop! ::grin::
P is going to bring O to the theater as well. She is SO excited to see the movie. She has never been to the movies (due to her food allergies) so she was quite impressed with the size of the theater. One of the employees let us sit in on Shrek 2 for a few moments to see if O would freak out about being in the dark wit all the noise, etc.. Not a chance. She **loved** it!
Gotta go to the bus stop.. see ya!

Scout Mart - A Success!
The girls loved Scout Mart. I think this was probably the best meeting we have ever had. I have just enough time to get dinner ready, eat and then bring M to the second grade dance at 7pm. I will be staying as her partner and P will be home with Miss O.
I need a drink. Who's buying?

Why?
Ok - here's the story. Our troop is going to a Six Flags event next month. It's for Girls Scouts and their families only for $36.00 per person. The ticket price includes lunch and a free admission ticket to come back another time. Normal ticket prices are $45.99 so you can see that this event and the price is a really good deal. Even better - our troop will pay for each one of our girls who attend. BUT, there is a catch. I need the money UP FRONT from the parents because I have to purchase these tickets in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door so I need to purchase and pay for these tickets as soon as possible.
I have had to track down no less than six families to find out if they are even going or not. ::sigh::
I hate nagging people for money but I refuse to pay for events like this with troop money. The girls work so hard selling nuts and cookies this past year. I am not going to let it get wasted.

We ended up staying for about 3 hours this morning! Luckily, Liz (the mom) is super nice and didn't mind (or seem to mind) us hanging out for a while.
I have a Girl Scout dance tonight. This should be fun.. I hope!

Troop Bake-Off
Mmmmmm! There were some very delicious cookies at the meeting today. The judges were quite careful in evaluating all 10 entries. 3 out of 4 judges picked the same cookie. The girls were on sugar overload!
Gotta feed O - see ya later!

Sucessful shopping
I managed to find, in the Dollar Store no less, ribbons that say "Great" and "Super". Each girl will get one of those just for participating in the bake-off. I also found little medals that say "Winner" on them. Each girl will get one of them too. I did find a nice looking 1st place ribbon pin for the winning entry. I hope our mystery judges are able to pick a winner!

Just keep printing
I am printing out pages and pages of paper for the troop meeting on Friday. I would like to send out a huge thank you to Shelley, Christine, Mary and Chris for ordering Girl Scout cookies from M. She has managed to sell about 110 boxes. Not bad considering the disgusting weather we have been having. If anyone else would like to order some cookies, you have until Friday to let me know!
The girls in the troop don't really know the GS Law very well. That's pretty sad on my part. So, I came up with the idea of making booklets for each girl and having them draw or write about each section of the law. They love to draw and do crafts so for them to illustrate these pages, I think they would have a great time. I hope. I picked up these really cute self-sticking foam letters for the "cover" of their book. I also have other foam pieces, not self sticking, that the girls can glue onto the cover as well.
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout
You know - if everyone lived by these rules, the world would be a nicer place to live.

It's COOKIE TIME!
We officially can start selling GS cookies today! Yippie! Anyone interested??
We have a troop meeting today. Lots of business to discuss with the girls. They are still somewhat rowdy and act quite goofy at the meetings. Hopefully, today they will mind their manners. I have a couple of HS girls coming in from the local 4-H chapter to show the troop their rabbits. This should be fun! Plus, I have our troop "Cookie Mom" who will be speaking to the girls about selling, how to be careful, never go alone.. all that fun stuff. LOL. Last year, our troop made quite a bit of money and we were able to take a trip to Build-A-Bear and have a bear-making party. THAT was a lot of fun!

Recovering
M and I had a roller skating event for all the GS troops in our service unit. Nine out of twelve made it from our troop. There must have been 200+ girls from ages 5-10 all stuffed into a roller rink. Oh my God - my ears are still ringing from all the screaming. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that little girls are quiet and dainty. BAH!
I gotta get the beasties ready for bed - showers and all that fun stuff.. Gosh - I really know how to have a good time.

C-C-Christmas C-C-Caroling
MAN - it was cold tonight! But, the girls that DID show up (Moms - thanks for not calling and telling me your daughter wasn't coming) had a great time. Did I mention that it was cold?? Brrrr! They loved the cookies and hot chocolate afterwards. The seniors that wanted to hear the kids enjoyed it as well. I am glad we did do it. I did have Bonkos tonight but ended up cancelling last night. I didn't know how long we would be out caroling. Turns out I could have made it anyway. Oh well.
Is anyone else watching "King of the Jungle" on Animal Planet? I am annoyed I got hooked on a "reality" tv show. Now I have to see which idiot wins!

14 gift bags are done!
Each bag contains:
1 8x11 notebook (Lisa Frank, Lizzie McGuire - girly looking)
1 red gel pen
1 candy cane
2 penicls - one holiday and one Girl Scout logo
2 pencil erasures
1 red sparkly crocheted ponytail
I made an extra for one of the leader's five year old who attends all the meetings.
Well - off to package everything up for transporting. Yikes!

I set up a Girl Scout event today since all my girls are off from school. We had a GREAT time. We went to a store down on Long Beach Island called Just Bead it! Well - off to feed MY girls and catch up on some mail. Bye!

Busy busy
We just went to Ship Bottom to plant dune grass as part of a Scout activity. It was a lot of fun! The weather was gorgeous. It was clear and sunny with a nice warm breeze. We were done in about an hour. I couldn't believe it. Last year, we didn't have as many girls turn out and it took us almost 2 hours. I think we have 15-20 people (girls and parents) show up to help.
Well - off to pay some bills. Yuck.

Second Brownie Meeting
The second meeting went MUCH smoother than our first meeting. The girls and the leaders discussed the proper behavior for 7 and 8 year old girls. We also discussed what rules the troop should be following. They wrote them out on individual pieces of paper and signed them. A contract! Mwahahaha! We also let the girls know that if they broke the rules, they would have to take a "break" (timeout) and sit by themselves for a few minutes.
Once we got that done, the girls were very well behaved for the rest of the meeting. It was almost surreal. Go me - go me!

Home - for good
I had a good time at Debbie's house. Another assistant leader showed up and we were able to plan a very things out for upcoming meetings. Only one parent showed up to complete paperwork ::sigh:: Luckily, a lot of parents filled out the forms last night at Sweet Jennys. I had one dad stop at my house today and fill out paperwork. That leaves three girls incomplete, two of which are not registered at all. It's a lot of work chasing down parents. Ai yi yi.

Parents
::sigh::
I am having the hardest time tracking down some of my Girl Scout troop parents. Debbie (the leader) and I need to have some papers filled out and we are constantly after particular parents. We have to nag them for dues, for permission slips, hell, even to return a call. You'd think we were asking for their life's blood. I just need a friggin' return call! Is that too f'ing much to ask? I am donating my time to help out your daughter. C'mon people - a little courtsey please.

Debbie, the other leader, is hosting a Home Interiors party tonight. I was going to go but I have too much to do tonight to get ready for tomorrow. I did find a couple things in the catalog! I found some stuff for my Mom's birthday. Did I mention that Mom and I have the same birthday? I was born on her 22nd birthday, obviously the best gift ever. LOL!

Trip to the depot
Home Depot.
I met the other troop leader, Debbie, at Home Depot. We needed to pick out flowers for the flowerpots the girls decorated on Friday. We decided on impatiens and a 40lb bag of potting soil. I also picked up 2 cans of clear sealer. The girls will be adding rub on transfers to the pots and I will bring them home Friday, after the meeting. I'll have to spray them right away as we will need them for Saturday morning. The girls will be cleaning a local playground for their community service requirement. 8am. Ugh!

Girl Scout Bake-Off
One of the things the girls in our troop will be doing is baking their own cookies. Homemade cookies. The girls will bring their cookies to the meeting tomorrow and we will get some teachers to judge and vote for the best cookie. M and I decided to make sugar cookies and we will stamp them out into cool shapes. we mixed the dough and it is in the fridge, chilling. I never realized just how difficult it is to bake with 6 year olds before. :arg: I want her cookies to be yummy and if she happens to win, great. If not, well, that's fine too.
