Officially - I'm Official!
I am now a proud badge carrying school aid substitute! All I need now is, well, a job. I can't work any days the rest of this week so hopefully I will get some calls for next week.
Youngest got a set of two spacers put in today. They look like tiny blue Cheerios. See?

She's not entirely happy they were stuck in between her teeth but so far, two hours in, she's being a good sport. Methinks there will be a dose of Motrin in her future.
My house smells delicious - tomato sauce and sausages - bubbling away nicely in my crockpot. I am also going to make some raviolis for the kids. Husband, on the other hand, will be feasting on sausage sandwiches. Since I am on WW, I will be fasting feasting on lasagna florentine!

I've been good with drinking my water, especially since a lot of the prepared meals have so much sodium. So, between water and decafe tea with sweet and low, I've been using the facilities quite a bit!
Ok - off to make a giant salad. Ciao!

Horray Hooray! It's Back to School Day!
Isn't it exciting?!
I love when the girls go back to school after an extended amount of time at home.
We spent some very nice quality time together yesterday. We cashed in some gift cards at Barnes and Noble and, by the time we were done, we only had to pay about $36 for 14 books. Now that's a nice bargain indeed! Next stop, Best Buy to pick up Wii Carnival Games. Bah, don't waste your money. It's wasn't as much fun as we thought. In fact, after the girls went to bed last night, Husband and I stayed up and played it for another hour before deciding that it wasn't really worth the $40. Luckily, the girls used their gift cards and I kicked in the tax. So, I guess it was worth the $2.79 that I had to pay.
Last stop, Pet Smart. We decided to pick up a few more fish for our 20 gallon tank. We added another Red Wag Platy (we already have one) and two Gold Twin Bar Platys. So, with those four plus four neons and a Black Platy, we've got a nicely stocked tank. Fishing anyone?
Well, I'm off to WallyMart. I've managed to stay away since before Christmas but I need a queen size mattress cover and some coffee creamer. Noting else (keep repeating to self). Oh, and deodorant too. Nothing else.
Nothing else!

YUM!
I whipped these bad boys up this morning. When I get to school, I will stick the ghost Peeps on each cupcake with toothpicks. This way, they don't get all squished in the cupcake carrier. I'm off to party!

We're EARLY?
Eldest was completely ready for school by 7am. When I say completely ready, I mean it - dressed, packed, teeth, hair.. all of it. Done. It figures - by the last day, she's actually motivated to get to school! I think she wants to show off her new "do". So, since she's ready, I allowed her to turn on the television. Guess who also manages to wake up early too? She comes out of her room all smiley faced and dressed.
Man, I was every day ran as smoothly as the last day of school!

And now... the end is near...
After today, there are only two more half days of school!
Please excuse the crazy woman who is singing and dancing in her front yard.
Eldest's class party is at 10am and all I need to do is bring in two gallons of orange juice. That's it.
Booyah.

Today is....
Class trip day!
The entire first grade (all ten of them) are going to a farm today. I feel so very sorry for any animals that they encounter through the course of the day. I am one of two chaperones for Youngest's class. I am looking forward to the trip although not the 45 minutes bus ride to the farm. Loud, noisy, and smelly - ahhh - three key ingredients in making this a fantastic trip. Oh, let's not forget sweaty or dirty or, God forbid, pukey
Wish me luck!

Finished
He didn't win.
I am still very proud of him for even making joining the race. I think he played a very large part in having our second budget question voted down. The second question was INSANE. Well, there was a measure of good faith involved in it to start but it certainly steamrolled completely out of proportion!
Good job honey - I love you so much!

Election Day
:::humming:::
Is there anyone out there who can name the 80's band that had a hit with this song? It's a tough one... and don't use the search engines either!!
Today is the big day! The polls open at 1pm and they are open until 9pm. Husband and I are on pins and needles. The race has been very close and I personally can't wait for it to be over!! I think a friend and I might have a "business" lunch today - cocktails and all!

Class Trip
I was invited to go on Youngest's class trip to the local library. Man, it's been a long time since I've ridden on a school bus. I always forget *just* how loud seven year olds are when riding a bus. OY already. The kids were very well behaved and the librarian was fantastic. She's the childrens librarian and the kids adore her. My girls have always enjoyed the library when Miss S is there.
Eldest's got a GS meeting today. It's 65 degrees and I don't want to keep them inside. I think today will be a free day. I'll drag them out on the playground instead. I think they'll have so much more fun!
Husband's busy with the campaign and it's going well. The election is April 17th. Keep your fingers crossed for him! I'm off to have some lunch and pack up for the meeting today. Ciao!

Room at the Inn?
Remember the guesst we had a couple weeks ago? Well, the poor little guy got a little freaked out in the classroom and bit one of the girls, apparently drawing a tiny bit of blood. The teacher decided that Snickers has got to go, and go quickly. Eldest was heartbroken and got quite upset in class. She's such an emotional girl. When I picked her and a friend up at school today, they told me the whole story. Sooooooooooooo, being the softie, I said I would talk it over with Husband and see what we could do to help Snickers.
Husband and I agreed that we would adopt Snickers, if the teacher would give him to us. I wrote a letter to her teacher, pleading our case. There will be a drawing in the classroom tomorrow to determine who gets custody of Snickers.
Oh, the drama.

So long...farewell
Well, today was the day that Snickers was to go back to school. Eldest was fine with it but Youngest was heartbroken. She managed to keep it together until we walked out of Eldest's classroom and then she started to lose it. She's a toughie though and managed to suck it up and hold it together. I don't think she wanted to cry in front of all the kids in Eldest's class. Poor sweetie.
Now they want a guinea pig and I (I can't believe I am typing this) don't think I would mind one either. Snickers was pretty damn cute and Husband liked him too. My sisters in law had some when they were growing up and he said they were pretty cuddly and very friendly. I'm concerned about Darla (my poor old kitty) but Snickers barely registered on her kitty radar.
Oh lordy - I might be a future guinea pig owner. Hold me!

Be Our Guest
Eldest invited a special guest from school to spend the weekend with us. He's absolutely adorable and is quite friendly, He is messy and eats quite a bit but, because he's so cute, I've let it slide.
I've got a cute picture of him - wanna see?

His name is Snickers and he is visiting us for a mini vacation from Eldest's classroom. He goes back to school on Monday. He's pretty young and still a little nervous around us. Now, I am not a fan of beady-eyed pets but I am getting over it. Oy - now the kids want to have their very own guinea pig. My cat - totally oblivious to the fact there is another critter in the house. I am really surprised about that. But, I guess when one is a 17 year old geriatric cat, one doesn't concern oneself about that. All she cares about is eating, pooping, and sleeping.
When I am 90, God willing, I hope that's all I have to worry about too.

Successful Parties
Both of the girls' class parties were very successful. That's such a relief! I was so glad I was able to attend Eldest's party. I missed it last year because I was the class mom for Youngestand the parties were on the same day.
We (finally) visited Santa last night at the mall because, as everyone knows, Santa lives at the mall. Check out this year's Santa picture.

I will be busy cleaning and cooking and baking. Ahh - good times. The girls have a half day today so I won't be able to wrap. Husband and I plan on doing that tonight when they are in bed. Wish us luck!

ZOOM!
I had SO much fun today. It was Luau Day in Youngest's class and I organized a picnic/party for the kids. I had the kids make a project for the teacher. Each child brought home a square, decorated it, then brought it back in for me. I assembled the squares, added pictures of each child and VOILA! A memory quilt. Thank goodness for Oriental Trading! We also gave her a bouquet of flowers too. For the aide in the class, I had all the kids paint their thumb and press it along the white stripes on this tote bag. When it dried, I added hair and a face buy using fabric paint. Each child's name was above the print, also using fabric markers. To the bag, we added a beach towel, bottle of water, a gift certificate to the local bookstore and a small bouquet of flowers. I have to say, I was pretty damn impressed with all that we did. I think I outdid myself!
Of course, I was NOT expecting a gift from the class. They placed their painted fingerprints on a small totebag for ME! It's so adorable. Inside the bag were thank you notes from all the children. I wanted to cry - it was that sweet.
The kids enjoyed the party while I was running around like a looney making sure everything was set up and ready to go. I am so lucky to have had very cooperative parents in this class. There was plenty of food, enough sand, and plenty of tissue paper. The kids also played with hula hoops, hot potato with a coconut, and I can't even remember what else.
Well, I'm beat! Tomorrow is also busy for me. I have a PTA breakfast and meeting in the morning then I am meeting my Mom for lunch. Yes, it's a special occasion - my BIRTHDAY! Not only MY birthday but Mom's birthday too. I was born on her 22nd birthday which makes her around... well... I'm not going to tell YOU guys! Suffice to say, I've always enjoyed June.
Ok, I'm off to attempt to get the kids to bed. Ciao!

Take Me Out The The Ballgame
Eldest has a class trip today to Lakewood to see the Blueclaws. Now - this is my idea of a good class trip! Luckily, I am also one of the chaperones too. I'm goin' to a ball game. YAY!

It's supposed to be close to 70 today. Man, how lucky are we? Maybe I'll even catch a tan.

The Letter People
Perhaps some of you remember the wedding.
Today's Show and Tell is all about the Letter People. Each child had to choose a letter person and dress like that particular character. Youngestchose Ms W.
This is what Ms W looks like:

Isn't she cute? The W represents "Wonderful Words" and if you look closely, Ms W has words written on her shirt. Ms W also has green hair. Youngestwanted to dress like Ms W. This is what she and I came up with last night and she modeled it for me this morning

Youngestlooks a little Rastafarian in the first picture but I wasn't about to spray her hair green. So, I whipped up the hat last night and just added green yarn for "hair". I love the second picture. She's such a lil stinker!

There's been a delay...
Delayed opening, that is.
The kids were thrilled to be able to sleep in but still bummed out about actually having to GO to school. Husband has today off - I'm pretty psyched about that. I'm sure all you ladies can guess why two adults, who just happen to be home alone, would be happy to spend time together.
::wink wink nudge nudge::
So we can go to Home Depot! To buy flooring!
:::whistles blowing,hands clapping::
Ok, maybe not ALL of you would go to the Depot but I want flooring for the addition and today is the PERFECT day to do it. The girls will be at school, which means no crying and whining (by me because we had to drag the kids with us) in Home Depot. I hate dragging the girls there. They are SUCH pains in the butt whenever we go there - you'd think that a 9 and 6 year old would LOVE going to a home improvements store. ::snicker::
Husband and I need new snow boots. The pair I bought last year are good but they are only ankle high. Not good when there are 12" drifts in the driveway. I also need to drop off the Valentines Day cards to the local nursing home. I hope that goes well and the residents enjoy the cards.
I'm off to drive Eldest to school. Ciao!

Family Fun Night
Tonight, I'm running a card making event at the community center. It's a PTA sponsored Family Fun Night. The kids get to come and make a card for Valentines Day. We are also asking that the kids make an extra card that can be donated to the local nursing home. I hope we get a nice amount of cards!
I'm off to set up tables. Catch ya later!

Such fun
I just love waking Eldest up 30 minutes earlier than usual so she can finish her homework.
/sarcasm
::update::
Well, she couldn't finish the assignment since she all of a sudden didn't understand it. So, we had her pack it all up and she can turn it in incomplete and explain to her teacher that she didn't understand what she needed to do next.
Good times folks - nothin' but fun...

Picture Day
Eldest just left for school in a completely grouchy mood. She looked very pretty but, with her pissy attitude, ugh. It was all I could do to get her out the door without going postal on her. I ironed her shirt and did her hair. Oy - she flipped out. She didn't like the way I did her hair. Good Lord, you'd have thought the world was ending. It was "too puffy", whatever the hell that means.
::sigh::
I'm going to the gym again this morning then I have to interview a potential Girl Scout leader at 1030am. Heck, I might even get to go to Toys R Us without the kids and pick up a few more gifts. I manged to get some at Walmart yesterday but their selection wasn't the best. I've got to knock this shopping out of the way!
Have a great day!

A week of freedom!
The girls have the week off from school. Booooyah! So far, they've been staying up a little later and waking up a little later. Heck, so have I! I know this is going to bite me in the butt when next week, the little darlings return to school. Oooh - forgot to mention that the three of us will hopefully get to hang out with this crew - IF - she ever calls me. (Hint hint!)
Husband took the day off too. He's going to do more plumbing work under the house. Both my FIL and BIL busted their butts working down here this weekend. We owe them so much. There's no way Husband could have done all that wotk alone. He's not going to school tonight either.
My Partylite party was a success. I can't wait to start picking out things with my hostess credit. A friend of mine booked a party so I get to pick a cool hostess gift and spend my credits too. Shopping is fun with OPM (other people's money)!
I have to run up to the local GS council today and sign up my Daisy troop for an event. I bet they will have a BLAST. They are just so darn cute! I also need to pick up badges for my Junior troop. Some of the girls have done really well this year.
Gotta run. I hope to visit a lot of you soon!

PTA
I've got a PTA meeting this morning. I'm going to pick up my friend, who was the 7 week old baby (hi Lauren!), and we're going out for bagels and coffee before the meeting. Did I mention that she gets to go out babyfree today? Thank goodness for husbands! I used to LIVE for those times when the girls were infants.
I don't have many plans for later today. I've got to seriously buckle down and get more of my GS paperwork done. I've also got phone calls to make - we can finally have our first meeting next Friday! Woohoo! We had a problem with the meeting time and I had to scramble around and set a later time and a completely different place. Oy - it never ends!
I'm off - got to hustle to kidlets to school!

Our first day of school
A good day was had by all - Youngestloved kindergarten, Eldest relaxed a bit about her first day and I, well, I had breakfast with two of my friends to celebrate the first day of school. We all cried just a little bit when our kindergartners drove off on the bus but we also knew that the three girls were SO excited about school.
Well, the girls have a dentist appointment in an hour. I've got to run for now.

It was fun
The schoolorientation was fun. We already knew our way around the school but it was a nice refresher for Olivia. Tomorrow we meet the teacher! Wooohoo!
In other news, gas in our area has now hit $3.01 a gallon. Husband drives ninety miles every day for work. Thank goodness he drives a Saturn 4-cylander but still, $3.01? That's a lot of freakin' money. The gas station at the Lacey rest area on the Garden State Parkway (near exit 74) still has gas at $2.57/gallon. I will be heading there tonight to fill up my car. Luckily, that's not too far from where I live.
What's the price of gas in your area?

Kindergarten
At noon today, Youngesthas kindergarten orientation. I'm so excited for her. We get to tour the school and even ride the bus! Tomorrow, Husband and I are meeting with Eldest's teacher and Youngest's teacher. The school, several years ago, set up a system where, a week before school starts, each parent and child could meet the teacher the child is going to have for the next school year. It's actually one of the few things I really like about this school. There are a couple more - I've just got to think about what they actually are for a little while. I hope that Eldest is in the gifted and talented program again this year. I am also hoping that Youngest's teacher will work with me regarding her food allergies.
Anyway - I'm off to feed the girls and get some work done around here. Hey, did I mention that my porta-potty is gone?? Yippie!

The end is near...
Eldest has four more 1/2 days and we are DONE with school! Hooooray!
We've been busy getting stuff done around here. Husband moved the pool pump and had to dig a trench and bury the electrical wiring. We will be inspected tomorrow. Wheee. Men in my house.

For all you roller coaster freaks, bad news about Kingda Ka - it's closed for the next couple weeks. Personally, I like roller coasters but I *hate* going upside down. Barf.
Youngest's been playing some cds with kid songs on them and now I've got this damn song stuck in my head:
Ta rah rah boom dee ay
Ta rah rah boom dee ay
Ta rah rah boom dee ay
Ta rah rah boom dee ay
What the hell is a boom dee ay anyway? I prefer George Carlin's version of this song:
Tah rah rah boom dee ay
Did you get yours today?
I got mine yesterday
That's why I walk this way.
Childish? Yep. Funny? Hell yeah.
Fun linkage for the day - Dancing Husband. I love this site.

Homework Woes
Eldest forgot half of her homework today. When I chastised her about it, her eyes immediately welled up with tears. I am so angry with her right now. Of course, it's the classwork that doesn't get completed in class so now it's homework but was conveniently left in her desk. She doesn't like to do this particular work in class, claiming that it is too distracting in her classroom. Because she is a good student, her teacher lets her bring it home. Of course, the 25 other kids in her class managed to get it completed. I am so frustrated with her right now that I just want to grab her shoulders and shake her.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Kindergarten prep
Husband and I have an appointment with the principal of the school where Youngestwill be attending in September. We are going to find out what we need to do in order for Youngestto be safe in class. I know the nurse and she assured me that the school has had children with multiple food allergies and that there are procedures that are in place. Husband and I will be making sure the policies will apply to Youngestand, if they don't, we will have them properly adjusted. My main concern is, obviously, the lunch room and the lunch aides. I am going to do all I can to be the class mom and be very involved with Youngest's class.
Lordy, I'm nervous.

Loser Mom strikes again
I just got back home from bringing Eldest into school. I was puttering around in the kitchen, cleaning off the table because I have a mom coming over in 30 minutes to register her daughter for Girl Scouts. The phone rings.
Kate: Hello
Eldest: Hi Mom
::in my head:: Oh God, what did I forget?
K: Hi honey. Did I forget something?
M: It's Grandparents Day today.
::in my head:: CRAP CRAP It's TODAY?
K: It's TODAY?
M: Yes
K: Honey, I'm sorry. I totally forgot about it. I forgot to tell Grandpa or Grammy to come in.
M: Well, Mrs. * (teacher) said that you can come in instead.
K: ::in my head:: frantically calculating my schedule and knowing this woman will be here in 25 minutes
K: OK. What time could I come in?
M: What time? ::I hear talking in the background::
M: 830-930
K: ::in my head:: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
K: Honey, I've got someone coming over in a little while. I am not going to make it in. I'm sorry.
M: ::silence::
K: Honey?
M: ::sniffling::
K: ::heart breaking::
K: Honey, don't cry.
M: ::in a most tiny voice:: I'm not
::scuffling noise::
Her teacher got on the phone once she saw Eldest getting upset. She explained to me that I could come in if I wanted and that only 5-6 grandparents were even attending. I explained that I was unable to come in and she said not to worry about it. She told Eldest that I was going to be going on the class trip and I would also be coming in the classroom later that week to help out. She put Eldest back on the phone and we said our goodbyes.
God - I feel like such a putz.

I've been keeping Youngestbusy today by having her do math worksheets. Let me tell all you parents that there is an incredible amount of information for schooling on the net. Good lord. I've been printing out sheets as fast as she's completing them. She loves these much more than sitting with a workbook. I've been able to find more things for Eldest in areas where I think she needs more strength.

I am going in to help Eldest's class. I am coming in early so I can have lunch with her in the cafeteria. Youngestis coming with me so I will pack her a lunch. She can't eat anything from the cafeteria anyway. Time to get ready. We eat lunch in about an hour.
I hope the food is decent!

Screwed Up
Eldest was student of the month. There was an assembly Wednesday morning (yesterday) at 915am to announce the students.
I missed it.
I missed my daughter winning her student of the month award. I feel like such a total asshole. I got the notice from her teacher last week and immediately placed it in my PDA. Correct time. Wrong date.
I picked her up at the bus stop yesterday and asked her how her day was. She turned and looked at me and said "Mom, you never showed up for the assembly this morning." I was stunned. I couldn't believe I forgot her assembly.
Immediately, tears sprang into her eyes and mine. I just hugged her and told her I was sorry, over and over. I think I might have been more upset about it that she was. Hell, I am crying as I am typing this out.
She got over it rather quickly but I have a feeling I will be hanging on to this for a long long time.

Playin' hooky
Eldest has a half day of school tomorrow. So, I made an executive decision for her to miss school. Instead, the girls and I will be going to the mall tomorrow to see Santa and maybe doing a little shopping. They are pretty excited about our "Fun Day". I am glad to do it. I know it's going to be a lot of fun and I can't wait. I hope they remember times like these when they are older.
I know I do.

School days
Youngestand I spent the afternoon in Eldest's class, just helping out the teacher. I made photocopies and set up a new bulletin board color for her. I don't mind going in to help because it gives me a chance to see Eldest in class, watch the teacher work with the other children and to sort of make my presence known within the school.
There are some odd things going on in the school. Things I can't really blog about. I am not completely thrilled with what Eldest is learning... or should I say, perhaps not learning. Husband and I are just working with her at home, giving her extra math and reading. I don't think she minds.. hell, she's good in math. I think she actually enjots it. I know she loves reading. LOVES it. I found out that her class had taken a form of the third grade math test last week, just as a trial run. Eldest, along with three other girls in the class, scored a high percentile. YAY!
I am just afraid that she will be one of those good natured kids who just get lost because they are not a PITA in the classroom. There are 27 kids in her class. Some classes have 30.
Oy - that's a lot of kids.

Going to school
Youngestand I will be going into Eldest's class around 1230pm. Her teacher can always use some help with filing or making copies. I think I need to get out of the house. I am having such a hard time sleeping at night that I come back home from the morning bus stop and I have to lay down again. Hopefully, this will pass very soon. I can't keep doing this to Olivia. I might even bring them to the park after school. It's quite sunny and even supposed to hit 60 degrees.
Perhaps it's time to enjoy the day.

Third Grade
I can't remember too much about third grade. I remember making a macaroni picture frame that was spray painted gold (tres chic). I remember that I really liked my teacher (Miss Dempsey) even though she was tough. I remember reading - a lot of reading. I also remember having a hard time learning multiplication. I do know that I had fun.
M brought home one math sheet for homework. Very easy stuff. It was all addition using the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands column (or whatever it's called in "new math"). As she got to the end of the sheet, the last question asked how many miles did Terry drive? All she had to do was add the four answers from the four previous questions. M just looked down at the paper and started to cry. She didn't even understand the question. Poor kid. After I explained it, she figured out the correct answer right away. It wasn't even difficult addition. We talked about how she felt and resolved the issue - I hope.
Then, we were talking about a math paper that she brought home from class. She had two answers incorrect. I <i>know</i> she knew those answers so I asked her what happened. Cut to the chase: The teacher is timing them. This is the year for third grade testing. M is not a child who can be rushed to answer questions. She panics and then it all goes to hell in a handbasket. She wants to get everything correct, while writing clearly and spelling correctly. She is quite the perfectionist about her schoolwork. How do I tell her that it might not matter - just to answer the questions as fast as possible. I don't know what to do.
So far, I don't know how happy I am with third grade and it's only the second week of school.

Executive Decision
I made a decision and P agrees with it.
We are pulling O out of preschool. She's not learning anything. In fact, I shouldn't even call it preschool - it's more of a day care at this point. I am disappointed about her having to leave but she's <i>bored</i>. BORED of preschool. How can a four year old be bored in preschool? I found out from O that the teachers put in a video for the children to watch. They put in a goddamn Teletubbies tape. WTF? If I want to dissolve my daughter's mind with excessive television, I can do that at home. For free.
I wish there was a Montessori school in my area. The closest one is just about an hour away. I've decided to take a much more agressive role with O and I want her reading asap. I know she can read some words. She can spell, knows her alphabet, days of the week, months of the year, her address, colors, phone number, <i>her little friend's phone number</i>... Hell - she even plays checkers against M. CHECKERS!! She's not that good - yet.
I don't mean to come off as a bragging mommy (heh) but O is really a smart little girl. I am so unhappy with the preschool "program". There is no program. Sure, they do arts and crafts and make really cute things. I will miss the holiday program and Mothers Day Tea... but it's become the Big Dollar Daycare Center now. I can't pay the weekly fee and feel good about leaving my child there. It's over.
Look out school. I'm coming in.

That pesly Murphy
If the morning bus is <a href="http://www.katespot.com/archives/005441.php#005441"target=_blank>extra early</a>, wouldn't it be safe to think that the dismissal bus would be right ob schedule?
Yeah. I got fooled too. The bus was 50 minutes late getting to the bus stop. If course, I was there <i>right</i> on time. I didn't want to miss my <a href="http://www.katespot.com/archives/005442.php"target=_blank>precious little darling</a> stepping off the bus.
She had a great day at school. One of her best buddies sits right next to her and another friend from the troop sits next to the best buddy. Oh, there is also busing bonus. Her BEST buddy is on the same bus and sits next to her. Boy - she was <i>thrilled</i> this morning!
Off to <strike>toss</strike> tuck the little <strike>boogers</strike> darlings into bed.

Gone
Well, she's gone... my baby is at school...
YAY! YAY! YAY!
We had a good morning. We all got up at 6am (ACK!) and did our morning routine. The bus was scheduled to arrive at 746am at the corner of the street behind us - a 3 minute walk. I took some pictures and then we walked down. As we got to our corner, we saw the bus at the bus stop!! RUN FORREST RUN! We bolted down the street and caught the bus. The driver was 15 minutes <i>early</i> which is practically unheard of on the first day of school! So, what a nice way to say goodbye to my child. We had an early morning run to the bus stop.
Man - I need some coffee.

M and I just got back home from her 3rd grade orientation. She should have an excellent year. We meet her teacher tomorrow. I can't wait!!

It's the last full day of school - woohoo!
Of course, thanks to a lot of snow this past winter, we now have 3 half days for next week. Grrr. Like the kids will learn anything in that time.
Whatever.
O and I are going to Walmart to buy more fuzzy yarn and flip flops. I will be making some more for some friends and their daughters.

We're home!
OMG - it was SO hot today. 94 degrees and not a lot of shade. The zoo was fun. There had to have been 5 or 6 different schools visiting the zoo today. A few from NYC. I can't imagine that was a fun bus ride. It must have been a 3 hour ride on a school bus. A HOT schoolbus. Ew.
I am so happy to be home - lol - I would have made a terrible pioneer. I am so spoiled by technology. I hate camping - too buggy. My idea of roughing it is staying in a hotel that doesn't leave a chocolate on the pillow.

Fun day
O and I had a fun time at the luau. It was a little chilly since it was held outside but the sun finally came out and warmed everyone up.
M's conference was just full of awesome news! Her teacher recommened her for the STEP program - which is the school's excel program!
<i>
The STEP program is designed to identify and meet the needs of students who have superior academic talents. The program recognizes these individual students and provides them with the educational experiences they need to develop their abilities to their fullest potential.</i>
I am so excited for her. I know she will do so well within that program.
I have some pictures to upload later.. have to get dinner ready now...

M is becoming a thorough, skilled and creative worker. She is
more organized and on task. She asks questions when she needs help
and participates in discussion.</i>
The principal also wrote "Nice work!" I am so proud of her!

Weather
M has a delayed opening for tomorrow. She doesn't have to be in school until 10:45am. I swear - she will be going to school until the end of damn June, just like last year.
In other news, P has his follow up doctor's appointment tomorrow at 1230. I will be driving him there. I have a bunch of questions for the doctor. I certainly don't think P should be going to work until he can actually <i>eat</i> something other than ice cream and tea. Poor guy. I think the ENT will agree with me and keep him out of work at least until Monday 2/1.
I was thinking about subscribing to Audblog. I had a lot of fun doing <a href="http://www.katespot.com/archives/004711.php#004711">my very first one today</a>. I will have to practice my phone sex voice. LOL. I used to do telephone sales for a computer reseller. I sold Apple computers - right before imacs were introduced. I sold 8500/8600's, 9500's, Powerbook 1400's.... it was a lot of fun. I could usually get most <strike>people</strike> men to purchase additional items on their order if I spoke a little more "sultry". Heee - commission was a great motivator.

Story Time
M was chosen to attend a young authors conference in March. Her assignment is to write a one page story. This has been difficult for her and even harder for me. I want to badly to jump right in and organize it for her. But, I can't. What good would that be for her? So, I helped her pick out some topics and then she narrowed them down and decided on the subject of her story. Can you guess? Yep. Horses.
Ack.

Schoooool's OUT!
YAY! I don't have to get up super early during the next two weeks! Well, except Christmas morning. Other than that, the girls will be lucky to eat breakfast by 11am.
Eldest's class party was fun. A few kids were out sick or already starting their vacation. Her teacher, Mrs. S, liked her gift. She opened all her gifts from the kids. She got some really nice things! After the class was dismissed, Eldest, Youngestand I stayed behind to help clean the desks and organize the room. I offered to come in and help her when class was back in session. You know, make copies, sort papers, etc.. She said she might take me up on that offer. I hope so as I would like to get more involved within the school. Hell - maybe even work there.
I am pooped. Dinner is McD's and I will put on a movie for them. If they are well behaved, they can have popcorn too. I have to clean my kitchen and living room. Yikes. I still have things to wrap too. I know that Husband bought my gift from Amazon and it hasn't arrived yet. I could just peek into my account and see what he purchased. But, I have managed to control myself and didn't even peek!

Gettin' ready
I finished making the cookies. I even had time to jump into the shower. Trust me - that's a good thing.
I put on a nice new sweater (not Christmasy) and pull on my favorite jeans, fresh from the dryer. OW OW OWWOWOW!! Mother of GAWD - that hurt! Freakin' burning hot rivets and button. JESUS! I think I just branded myself.
::sigh:: Off to school to pick up Miss O. I hope I can sit.

Working fine
I don't kow <i>why</i> the printer made that <a href="http://sugar-plum.net/kate/archives/004439.html#004439">weird noise</a> last night. I guess it had had enough printing for the night. Damn Lexmark. It's working fine now and I am merrily printing out crossword puzzels. Now - all I need to find is a coloring page..
We were running SO late this morning. Oy - the kids moved so slowly it was like they had an achor strapped to EACH leg. Arrrggghhh! I lost my mind and freaked out on them a couple times and felt immediate guilt for doing so. Like it's <i>their</i>fault I woke up late this morning. Needless to say, they are now safe and sound at school. Today is the LAST DAY before winter break. Now I am <strike>stuck</strike> blessed to be home with them for the next three weeks. THREE WEEKS!!!! <B>THREE WEEKS!!!!!</B> Heeeee
I need to bake some cookies for M's class party today. Just some chocolate chips. This way, when O and I come to the class, she has something safe to eat. And she will chow down on these cookies. They are pretty damn delicious too. ::patting myself on the back::
O's teachers opened their gifts this morning. They each got an ornament that we (the girls and I) decorated and another little gift. Pier One had these adorable painted ornaments - <a href="http://www.pier1.com/store/multiproducts.asp?catalog%5Fname=Pier1&category%5Fname=CLASS+Li+Bien+Ornaments&strStoreNavDept=DEPT+Seasonal&strStoreNavClass=CLASS+Li+Bien+Ornaments">Li Bien</a> - and they are gorgeous.
Ok - now I really <i>must</i> go bake. I have wasted enough time! Bye!

Class Party
Youngest's preschool class is having their class party today. The entire class will be performing for all the parents. I have to dig up the camcorder and the digital camera. It's going to be so cute. The preschool has about 45 kids in the program. Luckily, they all don't attend at once. LOL. Youngestgets to eat lunch with her class and I will be in at 1230pm to watch the show. I can't wait! I had better pack some tissues because I know I am going to cry.
Eldest's class party is tomorrow and I am in charge of finding desk activities for them. I am looking for Christmas word searches, crossword puzzles, coloring pages - that type of thing. I am going to make a little 3-4 page booklet for the kids. Plus, I will stop at the Dollar Store and pick up Christmas pencils and stickers for them as well. Oh, maybe I will make cookies too...
Gotta run for now. Catch ya later!

Preschool
Today, I have read two great posts written by two <a href="http://www.moodymama.com/archives/000755.php">wonderful</a> <a href="http://www.noshoesorsocks.net/archives/000112.html">women</a>. Posts like these make me really wonder WHY I send O to preschool. She can count to 40, knows her abc's, knows a lot of states and where they are located on the map, etc etc... Not bad for 3 1/2 years old. I placed her in preschool more for a social aspect, not counting on it to educate her. If she learns in school, that's fantastic. They do more crafts, reading and some activities. Frankly, for almost $200 extra a month, we could do a lot more.
Oy, now I really have to think about this.

Incident at School - UPDATE
Well - it turns out that the lunch aids knew the girls were out there. Apparently they were looking for a lost necklace or some sort of trinket.
Kinda glad it was something that simple although I don't think they should have been outside alone even if it was for 2-3 minutes.

Interesting
When I was sitting at tae kwon do, watching M, I struck up a conversation with another Mom. She has a little girl, 4 yrs old, who plays with O while the lesson for the older kids is being taught. Her other daughter, 6, is in M's class. P came home early today and O stayed at home with him. The little girl was disappointed that O wasn't with me. I had overheard Deb (the mom) talk to another woman about homeschooling. I asked her if she would mind if I asked her some questions. She was extremely responsive and we ended up talking for the entire lesson! She gave me a bunch of links and books for more information. I have been interested in home schooling because I think I will have to do it with O if her food allergies (all dairy, nuts, eggs, fish) are still as severe as they are now. Deb also gave me a catalog for the Calvert School. I know a few of you lovely ladies homeschool your munchkins. What works for you? Where are some good resources online? Any information would be appreciated!

P(I)TA
Well - I'm home from the P(I)TA meeting. They reviewed the budget, introduced members, blah blah. They answered some basic questions. This meeting was mostly for the room moms and getting classroom information. As they were about to end the main meeting, the P(I)TA president asked if there were any other questions. Of course, I shot my hand up asap. I asked "Why wrapping paper? Don't get me wrong, I am all for raising money for the school, but WHY $9.00 wrapping paper?" I saw many heads bobbing and nodding in agreement with me. Theresa response brought up the fact that Innisbrook gives the school 50% of the money raised and last year the PTA's "cut" was roughly $25,000. But if "you could find a better fundraiser, be sure to let us know for next year." Bitch. SNOOTY bitch.
When I got home, I called my sis in law who works for a major candle company located in the northeast and is super popular. You might have seen some of their stores in almost any mall. ANYWAY - I found out that there IS a fundraiser company (<a href="http://www.gbimarketing.com">GBI Marketing</a>) that carries some interesting products. I already ciontacted them for information about fundraising for the spring and fall 2004.
Ugh - I need some coffee.

And another thing..
M's school got so panicky that we have a half day scheduled for tomorrow. Christ Almighty people. CHILL out.
I might bring the girls down to the beach if it's not too crazy. Wait, I'd better not. O would probably blow away - she's only 30lbs. Heehee.
I remember hanging out underneath the Belmar boardwalk with my cousin and boyfriend. We were watching the surfers have a blast with Hurrican Gloria. I have some pretty cool photographs from that day. Hmmm - I should track them down...

Whoring for the PTA
<a href="http://www.javamama.net/mt/archives/000819.php#000819">Allison</a> had a rant about this very topic.
I HATE when the school sends this garbage home and expects the <strike>parents</strike> kids to hustle super expensive wrapping paper and gifts. You know what I do with it? It gets filed - in the trash. I am all for the school trying to raise money but COME ON! I refuse to buy the items from anyone. I <b>will</b> donate money or buy products from just about any organization - like Girl or Boy Scouts, softball, football, cheerleading....
I don't know if any of you remember the boy from Jackson NJ (<a href="http://www.ipce.info/ipceweb/Statements/sam_manzie_speaks_the_truth.htm">Eddie Werner</a>) that was murdered while selling school products door to door.
I am going to try to contact our own PTA president and see what I can do to change next year's fundraiser.

This is with her little friend who is in the same class. The dolphin mural behind the girls was made by all the kids in the school last year with the help of the art teacher. It's all made from broken tiles. It's quite impressive.

We survived the day
M made it through her first day of second grade and lived to tell about it. Too bad her bus was late. Way late. Like - 1 hour late. A problem at one of the middle schools delayed the return home for both the middle school AND M's school. Man - that sucked.
Anyway - I am off to cook dinner. Will catch up later!

Home from school
We had a meeting this morning to meet M's teacher. No - she wasn't in trouble ::grin:: It's a new procedure that the school is testing out. It's nice to officially meet the teacher <i>before</i> class starts. M liked her and so did P and I. M will do very well with her. Phew - I feel better now! I was so nervous about meeting her! LOL!

Olivia
I just put a call in to speak with either the teachers or the woman in charge of the preschool program. I want the teachers to be aware of her food allergies and I also want to know of they know how to use an Epi-Pen. I need to know what information I have to prepare for them. I am hoping that this will go very easy. If it becomes a hassle, well, they just don't know who they will be dealing with. Between Husband and I - it will be all taken care of - immediately. I don't anticipate any problems. Last year was just fine. But, she only had 4-5 other kids in her class. This year, she will have quite a few more in her class. There will be more teachers as well. I am mainly concerned about snacktime. Youngestknows not to eat anything from other kids but peanut butter is quite sticky. I am afraid of contact reactions. Hand + table + Youngest's hand + eye/skin/mouth contact = anaphylactic reaction. ::sigh::
I am thinking about writing a letter to be given to all the parents of the children in her class, asking for their help. I would never ask for peanuts to be banned. It would never happen and, frankly, it does't change the fact that she is still (deathly) allergic to it. It's amazing the knee-jerk reaction people have about peanut butter. You'd think it was an additional member of their family. Then, add all dairy products and eggs, people just look at her like she's weird. What's worse - pity. They pity her. I hate that. I get "Oh, the poor little thing. Can she eat anything?" Well - DUH - she's 3 1/2 years old. I guess she's eaten something since she was born. People have literally gasped when I told them she can't eat peanut butter "How terrible!" or "I'd never give up peanut butter." Sure you would - ;if your child and husband's tongue would swell up, their throat would close, causing them to start choking, wheezing, breaking out in hives, start vomiting and essentially suffocate - you'd give it up in an effing second.
WHen I am asked, I start to explain a little bit about her allergy and people are so obviously bored that I just stop in med-sentence. I think to myself "Why are you even asking me?" and "Why do I even bother?". I guess I am just hoping that someone gets it.

Gifts
These are the frames I assembled last night. All I had to do was attach the class picture and a backing.
<img alt="classframes.JPG" src="http://sugar-plum.net/kate/archives/classframes.JPG" width="448" height="336" border="0" />
This is M's frame:
<img alt="mckframe.JPG" src="http://sugar-plum.net/kate/archives/mckframe.JPG" width="352" height="264" border="0" />
The flowers and pots for the bus driver and helper:
<img alt="flowers.JPG" src="http://sugar-plum.net/kate/archives/flowers.JPG" width="370" height="250" border="0" />
I forgot to take pictures of M's teacher's gift. The pots were very pretty and we planted a miniature rose and a miniature mum. Mrs. B loved them.

Last two days of school
The frantic rush for teacher gifts. We are giving M's teacher two plants, already potted in pretty flowerpots. O's teachers are getting candles. M has an awesome bus driver so she is getting an African violet, potted in a decorative flowerpot.
Guess what I'll be doing tonight? Yep - potting plants!

Holy Exhaustion!
I *just* got home from M's school about 25 minutes ago. I had so much fun but I am so tired. I didn't think I would be there for 5 hours. I planned on two hours, three tops. I still have so much to do today. Mom is having her knee surgery tomorrow morning. I will be sleeping at her place tonight so I need to set up things <i>here</i> to make life easier for P. He doesn't really know the morning routine. I haven't packed or anything!
I'll blog from my Mom's place later.
Bye!

Luau!
Today is M's class party. It's pouring rain outside. Lovely.
The cookies are made - all 5 dozen of them. The kids will be making leis using silk flowers (thank you Hilde from Trading Spaces for the idea), crowns for the boys, hair combs for the girls, grass skirts using crepe paper and masking tape, picture frames using popsicle sticks, beads and foam shapes and, last but not least, coloring pages featuring beach/ocean things.
I have to get dressed and start packing. I need to run to WalMart to get more stuff! Bye!!

Graduation
O's preschool graduation will beheld June 25 - 2 days after her ear tube procedure. Technically, she doesn't really graduate but is switching to a different location. This preschool is about 5 minutes from the house. Yay!
Still feeling gross - all congested but it's not really breaking up. I don't know if the Robitussin is really cutting it. I might have to actually go to the doctor! Actually, I am annoyed with my doctor. I left a message for him regarding blood work. I want to find out my cholesterol and blood pressure. Since both of my parents have cancer, I am a little concerned about my health. I have yet to hear from the doctor or his staff. I have been calling and it's either busy or I get the "out of office message" during business hours! Grrr!

Just got a call
from one of O's teachers. Instead of <a href="http://sugar-plum.net/kate/archives/003012.html#003012">pizza</a>, the little girl's mom will be bringing in Happy Meals instead ::phew:: The teacher called to check and see if O can have one too. I feel so much better now - O loves hamburger Happy Meals! Now I can pick her up at her regular scheduled time.

Back home
The hoedown was a lot of fun. Tons of food that O just could not eat. Thank goodness for fresh fruit and veggies. Poor kid. Luckily, she was pretty good about it. I am making her a hot dog right now LOL.

A lot of fun
I brought O back with me and all of M's little girl friends went all goofy. "Ohhhhhhhhh! It's O!" It was cute - they were very helpful. Well - except when they tried to give O goldfish to eat! YIKES! M's teacher looked exhausted by the time we left at 1pm. Poor woman. I think I should buy her a bottle of wine for her gift at the end of the year - LOL.
It's been raining here..yuck. It's cold and windy too. Casual dinner tonight, open faced sandwiches with mashed potatoes or fries. I have a hair appointment at 6pm. I'm nervous - not sure what I want done. I know it has to be cut. Lord, it looks like **** right now. I am going to make another appointment to have my hair colored. The box stuff isn't cutting it for me anymore. I am going to have it colored back to my natural color (a **** brown) Ugh. I hate the color but I want to get it back to normal before I do anything else to it.
Well - off to the bus stop and then Brunos. Ta-ta!

Idiot
Does anyone else think that Michael Moore is an idiot? I wish that all these directors/actors would just keep their big mouth shut! While I don't mind their protesting (and their right to do so), there are times and places way more appropriate. :sigh:

O - field trip
O's preschool had a class trip today. They were going to take a bus to another preschool (her school has 3 classes at 3 different locations). Kids from the local HS will be performing a little play/skit for them. Awww! Too bad no parents can attend.
After I finished the gym, I drove back to her school, parked the car and waited for the bus. I just wanted to see her class get on the bus. They looked SO adorable filing out of the school. I wish I had brought my camera :banghead: DUH! Once the kids got on the bus, I couldn't see them at all! The seats are so high.
Now I am at home, making breakfast. Yummy! :lick: Time to catch up on some reads!

COLD!
OY! It is cold!
The guy on the radio actually said this while reading the weather forecast:
"Be prepared for unseasonably cold weather."
Ya think? DUH! It's frickin' <i>January</i> in the NorthEastern part of the United States.
I am going to have a nice cuppa cawfee and attempt to work on my GS paperwork that I didn't finish (or start!) last night.

Back Home
O did <i>great</i> at school. Her teachers are very nice. There were only 5 other kids there. Woohoo! Nothing like the benefits of the high ration of teachers/students. She didn't cry at all when I left. In fact, she cried when I came <i>back</i> to pick her up! Silly girl! She said she missed me. (aww)
She has her own cubby and folder. We packed her little Teletubbies backpack and we left.
[While she was in school, I got all my errands done (drop off scripts at pharmacy, papers to the doctor's office, oil change) and got to the library by 1005am! It was SO nice to go through the library.. slowly! I borrowed books for ME!!! Oh - speaking of books... can anyone suggest some good reads? Leave 'em in my comments please!!]
O picked out her own lunch today, since she is a "big girl" :cheerful: Of course, she weaseled a cupcake outta me too! I am really so proud of her. :cloud9:
The carpet is being installed tomorrow. I am not too sure about the time - they will call in the morning. So - P and I have to clear out the entire living room and my hallway. Ack. Things will be shoved and stuffed everywhere!!!! :arg: My computer will be disconnected tonight ::GASP!!:: I will try to hook it up in the bedroom.. if there is any room at all.

O's First Day
I am SO excited! It's O's first day of school today! There's a small pre-school in town that's just opened. It's run by the Board of Education. The teachers are Epi-Pen trained (thank GAWD!). Of course, I am nervous as hell. She will have 2 Epi's at the school as well as a huge bottle of Benedryl. I think I will be hanging around the school - anywhere within 10-15 minutes. Just in case. Luckily, the library is about 5 minutes away!! I guess I will be getting caught up in all my reading!
Gotta run for now! I will update later! Bye! :cheerful:
