Girl Scouts

This is Eldest's Junior vest.

Junior Vest

She worked quite hard to earn all the badges on the front of the vest. Since I am the troop leader..ahhem.. I mean.. mentor.. I felt it very important that she bust her butt twice as hardas the other girls. She did earn a few badges on her own but, for the most part, all of those badges represent three years worth of meetings.

As you can see, our troop has been quite busy.

This is the back of her Junior vest.

All those patches are called "fun patches". Whenever we'd go on a trip, do a fun activity, sell nuts and cookies, or even some community service work, I would pick up a fun patch. I stopped buying fun patches last year as the girls vests started filling up and the patches were costing us quite a bit of money.

The girls bridged to Cadette level in May so we get to start all over again with a new vest. It looks so empty - with nothing on it but an insignia tab and a couple earned IPAs

I know a lot of people have problems with Girl Scouts. I do believe that it is a great organization and, unfortunately, there are people who experience bad situations. At the most basic level, it is completely volunteer-run. I know myself, while running two troops, that it is difficult to balance everything and provide a decent program for the girls. I think that's what a lot of people forget - it's for the girls. Not the moms.. not the dads.. not the leaders. The girls. I've had a few uncomfortable moments as a leader when dealing with parents and even other leaders. That just sucks.

Luckily, for the most part, I do enjoy running Eldest's troop - the girls are all 7th grade and want to be part of it. Some girls I've had since Kindergarten!! It's incredible to see how much they've grown.. especially since most of them are taller than me! I've had soem difficult moments but the parents are great and very supportive.

I can't ask for more than that.

Very impressive. I guess that those patches tell a three-year story.
