"Behind the Scenes" at Kate's House

I haven't been writing about some of the medical issues going on around here. With the exception of Eldest, the rest of us have been under the weather, so to speak.

I have been having feeling a lot of stress on my vocal chords for quite a long time, on and off for about five years now. My primary doctor had suggested the possibility of nodules. I went to an ENT on Monday. The doctor said I am a "Voice Professional". Of course I talk a lot - I'm *really* involved in a lot of different things and, besides, I'm a Mom. What Mom doesn't have voice issues? After discussing some things with me, the ENT decided to get an up close and personal view of my vocal chords by doing a procedure called nasolaryngoscopy. You may be asking yourself, what kind of procedure is a nasolaryngoscopy?

Nasolaryngoscopy is the passage of a small, flexible fiberoptic scope through the nasal passage to gain a direct view of the structures in the nose, nasopharynx, and larynx and allow for clear identification of potential disease.

In English?

The doc stuck a tube UP my nose and down the back of my throat. I'll wait while you all say eww eww eww. Now ladies, as you are well aware, we have procedures done with tubes and swabs all the time. We have almost become accustomed conditioned to being uncomfortable. Almost. This is just another orafice and another tube and it was uncomfortable. VERY uncomfortable. Thank goodness it was over fairly quickly. Luckily, I have no nodules on my vocal chords. ::phew::

I do have an appointment with a speech pathologist in order to test my voice and make sure there's no damage. I found that a little interesting. I might also have Reflux Laryngitis, which could be caused by heartburn. The doctor gave me a scrpit for the little purple pill. Hopefully, that will work. I don't want to sound like Rita Cosby. Click on any of her videos and listen to her voice. The poor woman sounds just terrible!

Chilly Tuesday

Husband and I attended a wedding on Saturday. Our neighbors' daughter got married in a lovely ceremony and one helluva fun reception. I discovered a tasty drink - Vodka Seven. Man, those were AWESOME! I think I had about seven or eight of them. I know I danced a LOT too. I managed to snap a picture of Husband and myself even though I was slightly tipsy bombed.
I've hidden it in the extended entry.

I'm off to do some errands. Catch ya later.

Upon further investigation, I discovered that Smith and Hawken has several items for sale that have proceeds that specifically go the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Go on and check them out.. help raise money for a cure.

Sickie

I still have the cold I caugh from Youngestalmost ten days ago. It feels like I have a fifty pound weight on my chest. My right lung occasionally hurts when I breathe. I am so uncomfortable that I actually made a doctor's appointment for myself. I think I've got bronchitis or pneumonia. No fever - just can't breathe. I also have mild asthma so I've been huffing my inhalers, which haven't done diddly squat. Hope I get some good drugs tomorrow!

So - how are you all doing? Better than me I hope!

Shopping for children

Looks like Madonna is trying to stay in the news and decided to buy herself an African child.

quoted from the NY Post:

"Days ago, she lined up 12 African boys - tots hand-selected for her perusal. She picked out a 1-year-old, David, to take home in her luggage.

Well guess what? The boy selected in this freakish slave auction is no AIDS orphan. He's got a biological father, plus a granny - but was placed in an orphanage after his mother died. His family loves him. They just can't afford him.

If Madonna possessed a speck of sanity or shame, she would write a generous check. Instead, the boy's father says he is thrilled at the prospect of a wealthy American carting off his progeny.

What the hell?

I applaud anyone who adopts a child, especially one from a different country. I can't imagine the enormous expense involved but the joy of bringing a child into your home certainly outweighs the cost. But, to remove a child from a family who loves him but can't afford him - that's horrible. Placing children in a line-up just so you can pick out the "nicest" one is flat out cruel and heartless.

According to this article, Malawi (the country) does not allow foreigners to adopt a baby. Hmm - I guess when Madonna showed up on her money train, the government looked the other way. Like Cyndi Lauper said in the 80's, money changes everything.

Normally, I don't report on too many celebs and their stupidity selfishness but this story just chaps my ass.

The idea well is running dry...

How much day to day stuff can I post here? I mean, it's always the same damn thing....

Had to get that out of my system. I want to publicly thank Joanie for her generous (and unexpected!) gift of upgrading my Flickr account. Thank you again my friend. {{{hugs}}}

I've been behind in all of my endeavors - class mom, troop leader, bylaws chair (PTA) as well as the house and home and all that entails. Most Some days, it feels like I am vainly trying to swim upstream and obviously getting nowhere. ::sigh:: I must prioritize - but - where to begin?

Geez, what a Debbie Downer post. Ok, I'm off to finish something.

S A T U R D A Y!

Wheee - I caught the girls' colds! Ain't I the lucky gal? So, I've been chowing down Robitussin and ibuprofen with lots and lots of water. I still feel quite thirsty but if I don't take the cold meds, I think my sinuses would explode! Plus, I have a nasty cough too. I'm giving myself until Monday and hope that I am feeling better by then. If not, I"m going to attempt to visit my doctor. Maybe I'll get an appointment by Wednesday, just before my mammogram. It would suck to have a wicked coughing jag with my breast all smooshed in the machine. OUCH!

The girls and I rented a couple movies yesterday - Brother Bear II (SNOOZE!) and RV (FUNNY!). I also have Benchwarmers, Bad News Bears, and Secondhand Lions to watch. I'm tv'ed out because I've been on the couch for most of the day. Every time I'd sit on the couch, one of the girls would sit THISCLOSE to me or they'd on my lap. It got to the point where I would just sit on the floor so they would leave me alone. God - that sounds so terrible when I type it out but I really needed them to just leave me alone!

I have more to write out but I'm still feeling blah. The couch is calling my name so I'm outta here... Ciao!

Fever

Why do children always spike a fever at night?

::edited at 615am::
The fever (103.7) cooled way down by 545am. I tucked her back into bed just in time to wake up Eldest for school. Husband just got up as well

Home with a sickie

Well, we've managed four weeks of school before the inevitable fever and sore throat fairy decided to pay us a visit. Looks like poor Youngestis the current victim. So, for now, she's loaded up with water and motrin. Thank goodness for motrin. I wonder if it's sold by the quart?

New Study

(sent to me by a friend)

A study conducted by UCLA's Department of Psychiatry has revealed that the kind of face a woman finds attractive on a man can differ depending on where she is in her menstrual cycle.

For example: If she is ovulating, she is attracted to men with rugged
and masculine features.

However, if she is menstruating, or menopausal, she tends to be more
attracted to a man with a spear lodged in his chest and tape over his
mouth while he is on fire.

No further studies are planned.
