Support is Needed

I spoke with my friend Lauren this morning and she informed me of a very sad news story. A 21 year old soldier from Kokomo Indiana was killed February 22 when an IED (improvised explosive device) detonated near his Humvee during patrol operations in Hawijah, Iraq.

The horrible part of the story is this -

The family of the soldier has had their home vandalized and they've also received very disturbing telephone calls where the caller said "I’m glad your son is dead." The full story is here. This particular group is headed by the Westboro Baptist Church and that disgustig excuse of a human being - Fred Phelps. I really find it hard to believe that "God Hates Fags". The Bible can be twisted to support nearly any belief. I am horrified and sickened by these actions. Losing one's child is hard enough - having to listen to insults and read signs like "God Made IEDs" would make the funeral unbearable beyond belief.

Lauren decided to head up a letter campaign to send to the grieving family. So far, she's received over 350 emails in response. I know she can count on me and my family. I'd be honored to have a few of you guys also help out. If you are interested, just leave me a comment and I will forward your request to her right away.

Thanks.

This is NOT acceptable to any true believer in Jesus Christ. How DARE they use HIS name in their sick twisted actions.

I will certainly help out.

Two of my closest friends have done numerous tours in Iraq. One just got home yesterday...the other leaves in April.

Whatever you need, you let me know.

I'm floored. How can anyone do this? In what twisted reality would something like this be acceptable? How do they sleep at night, knowing what pain they've caused to greiving parents?

I'm in. Forward my info too. Thanks, Kate.

As a US Army veteran who served during the Gulf War, please count on me for support in this campaign. Please contact me through my blog.

It is so hard to see Americans who call themselves 'Christian' act out in hatred against those who serve our country and the families that stand behind them. Maybe we can give this family some comfort in the knowledge that there are those who support them.

I too am in Kate. Please forward my info or send me the info. I cannot believe these morons really think that this behavior is even remotely acceptable. Disgusting!

Fred Phelps and his extended family are beyond contemptible they deserve no less than to experience nothing more than a Faustian existence!

My son fought in the Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq, and now faces redeployment back to Iraq within the next eleven months. Parents of children deployed to war zone are worried and stressed much less devastated after hearing of their child’s death.

Confronted now in their time of grief by the cowards of Phelps and his family of followers, each one having sold his or her soul for collateral for their life here among the living, is a travesty.

Yes Kate, ask me for anything and I will do my best to deliver.

Try to ignore Phelps and friends. They are no better than the islamic extremists using religion for there own personal preferences regarding lifes choices.

God Bless You and Your Family!

Chris,

I understand when you say try to ignore Phelps and friends but when they are harrassing a soldier who got killed in Iraq family by egging their house and making horrible telephone calls thats when ignoring doesnt work for me anymore.

Thats why this letter writing campaign was started to let this soldiers family that we do care and will always be grateful to their son.

When you get a chance send me some info too. Some people are just inherently ignorant and shouldn't be allowed to breed. Sheesh.

You realize this is just "moments" from my home town and has been in all the news. Thankfully, this group never showed... but they will again at some other funeral of some other family that lost their son or daughter.

Fred Phelps makes my blood boil... he is not a Christian... he is an extremest.... similiar to Bin Laden.
