Dirty Jobs

Husband and I watched a show on the Discovery Channel last night - Dirty Jobs. The idea of the show features the host - a very handsome Mike Rowe - traveling around the US, looking for and working the dirtiest jobs. Some parts of the show are just plain funny and other parts, well, they are pretty frigging gross. Some of the things I've seen on the show - garbage collection, sorting garbage, collectiing roadkill, assisting a marine biologist who studies sharks (Mike barfed during this one - can't say I blame him), collecting stallion semen, inseminating a mare, retrieving golf balls from an pond while avoiding alligators, the jobs get worse and worse.

To all the people who actually have to do dirty jobs every day - thank you.

Cement

The footings are being poured right now. I still can't believe that I am having an addition put on my house! My Anderson french door, screens and Anderson windows arrived yesterday. A little early but here nonetheless.

Yesterday was another busy day. I registered my Junior GS troop at council and bought all the essentials: books, vests, t-shirts, troop crests and numbers and Youngest's Daisy tunic. It's SO CUTE! ::View image::. I had some time to kill before we met Husband at Lowes so the girls and I stopped in Target. They had school supplies on sale so the girls got some 2 pocket folders, crayons and I snagged a ton of glue sticks and three 3 subject spiral notebooks for Scouts. I also bought two 10-packs of spiral notebooks. C'mon, they were a $1 for each 10-pack! Whatta bargain! I picked through the clearance racks and found a pair of jeans for Youngestfor $5.38. Woohoo! I love bargains.

After we made our purchases at Target, the girls and I drove to Lowes to meet Husband. He and I wanted to take a look around and see what was available there. We have a Home Depot about 5 miles from the house and I didn't like anything there. The girls were bored and got a little antsy but they survived it. Husband and I didn't have to kill them. Maybe remembering that we would stop at McDonalds AFTER we finsihed at Lowes helped. Of course, the girls did make it to Mickey D's and then we headed home. They took off to play with the neighbor kid for about an hour while Husband and I relaxed and watched tv.

Today - I'm still running around.. gymnastics, scout stuff, tons of phone calls, the water test for the well... and I still have to go to the supermarket and work on laundry.

Blah.

I've got to come clean and admit it; I watch Kept on VH1. I'm down to the last four guys - Maurizio, Austin, Anwar and Seth and they are all my favoirtes. Maurizio was voted off last night and we're down to the last three guys. If you've already seen how the show ends, PLEASE don't tell me.

What show is your guilty pleasure?

Rainy Monday

It's kinda nice that it's raining today. I've gotten a lot of work for Girl Scouts completed while listening to MP3s on the computer. The girls are coloring these acrylic figures made by Rose-Art. Youngesthas the dolphin and Eldest has the unicorn. They are really enjoying them too.

At 1pm, we are visiting my friend's house to do more GS stuff. We have to plan out the Daisy troop meetings. Later tonight I'm getting together with my assistant for my Junior troop and planning those meetings. I think I'm gonna bring a bottle of wine. Wheeee!

I've got to run - more phone calls and I supposed I should check on the girls. They've gotten too quiet.

Sum-Sum-Summertime

The girls and I paid a visit to the Ocean County Fair yesterday. I got a little crispy on my neck, arms and chest. Ouchies. ::View image::

We had a load of fun visiting the 4-H tents and seeing the goats ::View image::, bunnies ::View image::, cows ::View image::, llamas ::View image::, donkies ::View image::, horses ::View image, chickens ::View image::, and roosters ::View image::. The girls got a pony ride - ::View image:: and ::View image:: I had the girls' portrait sketched ::View image:: and ::View image::

We also saw the Jon Corzine booth. ::View image:: He was speaking at the fair today at 115pm. I also spotted the pro-life booth. ::View image::. I am all for pro-life but posters depicting partial birth abortion on display at a county fair?? I think that's the wrong place and time. I kept shielding the girls from looking at the images. Of course, the booth was right next to the gentleman doing the sketches.

We also visited the NJ 101.5 booth ::View image:: and I did win a 4-pack of tickes to see the Trenton Thunder on 7/27. I was able to guess the name and song title of a band (The Beatles and Day Tripper). Woohoo. The game is 7/27 at 7pm. We're all excited to go to the game. ::View image:: and ::View image::

The girls rode some rides ::View image:: and ::View image::, enjoyed the fair ::View image:: and all it's silly sights ::View image::

Good times

Tonight, I was graced with a phone call from this lovely lady who is at a fantabulous blog meet in New Orleans. She passed the phone around and I spoke with Sam, Denny, Kelley, Kim, Dash, Zonker and then passed back to Christina. They are having a great time and I wish I could have been there with them, sipping margaritas in Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.

Have one for me guys!

Like buttah

My pool is 88 degrees. 88

Man, it's nice to swim in a warm pool. The kids and I horsed around for over an hour. When I realized it was 630, we all piled out so I could make dinner. Husband is chain-sawing all the branches. He's a manly man ::rowr::

I'm gonna see if he will jump in the pool later.

The construction begins!

Actually, it begins tomorrow but we had a lot of last minute work to do yesterday, like removing a ton of branches out of the trees. I didn't remove the branches - my wonderful husband and awesome FIL did all the work. I had brought the girls to a magic show that was held at one of the library branches last night. On Tuesday night, we all went to a different library and saw a great presentation called Snakes-n-Scales and Turtle Tales. That was SUPER cool. Plus, I found out that the guy was local and does presentations to boy and girl scout troops. I passed his info on to the Service Unit Manager asap.

How about some random pictures instead?

Doing the roots

I figured I would take 30 minutes of my day and actually dedicate them to me. You may be wondering what kind of fabulous pampering I have planned for myself. A bath, a manicure or even a mini spa treament perhaps.

Nope.

I'm coloring my hair. Too many damn grays popping up at my temples. I'm 35 not 55. I cannot have gray hair. No frigging way.

I've already applied the product in my hair and, as I am typing, I am feeling a slightly more tingly/burny feeling that usual. I hope I didn't get a crappy hair kit. I don't have time for screwed up hair. The last time I had screwed up hair was when I was 17 and my friend, who was currently attending vocational school for hair (yeah, I'm a sucker), offered to help me frost my long hair (past the middle of my back). She asked me how light I wanted it and I stupidly said "As light as I can get it".

Now, as anyone in the hairdresser field might know, it's ideal to advise a client if they, in your professional opinion, have chosen unwisely. My friend, although sweet and nice, wasn't the sharpest scissor in the batch, if you know what I mean.

She said "Ok" and slapped the cap on me, pulled my hair through and applied the coloring. While my head was baking, we chatted and had a grand old time. The timer rang, she checked my head and told me it was time to rinse. We rinsed and rinsed over her tiny bathroom sink. When I flipped my head up and looked in the mirror, I sucked in my breath and was, literally, speechless for a moment.

My hair was white blonde. WHITE BLONDE. I am a natural brunette - medium brown. I was BLONDE, with a nice dark root going down the center of my head. It wasn't a nice blonde either. My hair felt, literally, like straw. I freaked out and said "Oh my God. WHAT DID YOU DO?" My friend said, and I swear to God she said this, "Well, that's what you told me to do." I was horrified. All I could think was "My mother is going to kill me." I ended up leaving shortly after that and driving home. It was late at night and I just snuck upstairs in the apartment and went to sleep.

When my mother saw me the next morning, she was speechless. Well, only for a moment before she flipped out. Looking back, I can't say I blame her one bit (Hi Mom!). She told me to never ever let my friend work on my hair again. Of course, I didn't need any further convincing. My hair was just ruined.

About a year later, both Mom and Husband convinced me to go to this new and fabulous salon that just opened up in our area. Mom had found an awesome stylist and she was going to fix my hair. So, I make the appointment and go in at my scheduled time. This place was one of those glamorous salons. You know the type, with the gorgeous stylists that make you feel insignificant. Immediately, I felt uncomfortable. Denise, my stylist, was stunning, just beautiful. Tall and blonde and, thankfully, very nice. She made me feel very comfortable right away.

Then, she looked at my hair. If this was a horror film, the Psycho music would have been heard at this point. :::reet reet reet reet::: I am surprised that Denise didn't scream and stagger backwards after looking and touching my chemically damaged hair. Once the shock wore off, she kept saying "I've never seen hair this damaged". Other stylists were looking at me like I was a lab rat.

She cut off about 8 inches of hair. I was so sad. I loved my long hair, damaged or not. After the chopping, she dyed it back more towards it's natural color. When I was all rinsed and blown dry, I looked in the mirror and instantly hated it. HATED it. It was short and mud colored. Husband, the charming and wonderful man that he is, said it looked SO much better and he liked it. When I showed my Mom, she liked it too.

So, there you have it folks. The lesson of the day: Friends don't let friends frost their hair.

Now it's time for me to rinse. Any one else have hair horror stories?

Harry Potter Spoiler

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince spoiler below.

::edited to add -looks like someone else isn't too thrilled with this particular book either::

I have to honestly say that I did not like this book as much as the others. I didn't like the way it was written. Somehow, it seems like it was written by someone else. Rowling's style seems to have changed. Another thing I didn't like was the use of stronger language - I was a bit surprised when I came across the word slut while reading this book. I know that it isn't a BAD word but a lot of young kids (9-12) are reading this book. Also, a lot more romance (aka "snogging") in this book. I guess the hormone fairy showed up at Hogwarts. Harry and Ginny? Please, cut me a break. ::edited to add:: I forgot all about the throwing of "the finger" until Susan mentioned it in her comment below. Again, was that really necessary?

I totally didn't see Snap as the Half-Blood Prince. Rowling really surprised me on that one. I knew he was obviously going to be main antagonist but I was pleasantly surprised to see him take such a supportive role in turning back to the Dark Lord. I like Snape - he's such a wad.

As for Dumbledore dying, well, there was enough foreshadowing about that throughout the entire story. I particularly did not like the scene with him and Harry down at the lake. Major creep factor to read about Dumbledore writhing, screaming and crying on the ground. Perhaps it was the five previous novels that made him seem immortal?

When I was discussing the book with Husband, he suggested to me that it sounded like Rowling took a page from George Lucas and what happened with Star Wars. She needed to go back and write the how and why Vader... err .. Voldemort became the way he is today. So, in that case, is The Half-Blood Price is Episode 2 and 3?

I did like the fact that Luna was back and even commentating at one of the Quidditch matches. She is quite an enjoyable character and I can't wait to read about her in the next book. Plus, I am also looking forward to Bill and Phlegm's Fleur's wedding.

Overall - I think I was a bit disappointed in this book. It wasn't what I expected at all.

The waiting game

I figured I would write a quick post while I am eagerly awaiting my delivery of my Harry Potter book. UPS has it out for delivery and I am hoping it arrives soon. Yeah, I'm a geek. Whatcha gonna do about it?

Heh - Husband just caught a teeny tiny frog. The girls thundered down the hallway and zoomed out the back door to see it. The frog is awfully cute. Of course the girls asked if we could keep it (no way)

Last night we watched Shark Tale. It was pretty funny. I like Will Smith so it wasn't too difficult to enjoy it. Of course, with the additional talents of De Niro, Peter Faulk and Matin Scorcese, it just added to my viewing enjoyment. I am not a Jack Black fan but even he was funny in this as a vegetarian shark.

I think I might do some crocheting while waiting for my book. Tomorrow Never Dies is on TNT right now. I lurves me some James Bond.

WTF is WRONG with people?

Moms putting kids in car trunks.

"The arrest of a Virginia woman for traveling with children in her car trunk has called attention to a recent series of incidents in which mothers have stashed their kids in trunks, including one instance when a boy died.

One woman was punishing her children, another lacked a babysitter, another said her kids wanted to ride in the trunk, and two said the car was too crowded.

"It's silly and dangerous on so many levels," says Alan Korn of Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit group."

It's astounding that people can be this stupid. Is this such a hard concept to grab?

DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD OR PET IN THE TRUNK OF YOUR CAR. Period. No exceptions.

Other cases since May:

• Laverne Dunlap, 35, of Gardena, Calif., was charged in June with three counts of child endangerment after allegedly driving 70 miles with two children - a boy, 15, and a girl, 10 - in the trunk. Seven (emphasis mine) more people were riding in her Toyota Corolla.

• Tamantha Parker, 33, of Quantico, Va., was charged this month with child abuse after police said she locked her two children, who police said were about 5, in a trunk as punishment for misbehaving in Wal-Mart. Nine people were packed into her car, including at least two others who should have been in child car seats, police said.

• Lanora Lucas, 37, of Frederick, Md., was charged last month with reckless endangerment after a police officer saw her put her 9-year-old son, 3-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old friend into her Volvo's trunk. She told the officer the kids wanted to ride there.(emphasis mine)

Oh that's brilliant. Maybe if they want to play in traffic or jump off a bridge, you can let them do that too.

What planet are these people from and can we just send them back?

I wish

I really wish I has some/any fabulous topics, something that would really spark some conversation.. but, alas, I do not.

Could it be that I - Queen Motormouth - have *finally* run out of things to discuss?

Oh, I know of two fabulous things that I can mention:

1. Jim from Parkway RestStop was mentioned in a NY Times article about NJ Bloggers. Way to go Jim. You rock no matter what. I really liked your quote too.

2. Mary from BookBlog is coming down for a visit this afternoon. The girls are excited to see her because she hasn't been at my place since August 2004. When I spoke with her last night, she somehow wrangled me into being September's moderator. Now I need to find a good book. Maybe I'll choose the new Harry Potter? Hmm, on second hand, maybe not.

What can I say? I love the Harry Potter series. I am going to barricade myself in the bedroom for the weekend just so I can rip into this book. I decided I am not going to the store to buy one and I will have my very own copy delivered via FedEx from Amazon.

I just finished reading "Eleven on Top" by Janet Evanovitch. WHile i enjoyed and giggled my way through it, I didn't like it as much as I liked "Ten Big Ones". Still, it was a very enjoyable read and I recommend it to anyone looking for a light and funny book.

Camp - Day 2

I conked out at 1115pm last night during Family Guy. This show is my new addition. I just love Stewie - the sick little freak. I woke up sometime around 4am with the Cartoon Network still on the television. My glasses were askew on my face and I think I might have even drooled - just a little bit.

Nice visual, eh?

I think I glanced up at the television, fumbled for the remote, managed to turn it off before I rolled over and went back to sleep. Next thing I know, it's 645am, Husband is talking to me and trying to wake me. I am just psyched I got 7 hours of sleep - in a row!

Off to tend to the masses.

Fun fun fun!

An incredibly busy day - even by my standards. Eldest loved camp. Youngestloved her swim lessons. Oh yeah, Eldest has a wicked ear infection. I've got the play by play listed below, if you want to follow along with my day.

I woke up at 645am this morning and left the house by 745am. Eldest caught the bus to camp, I arranged to rent a storage unit, did a bank deposit, went to Wal-Mart, went to pharmacy, made a pedi appointment for Eldest, went to library, went to swim lessons and finally made it back home by 1220pm for lunch. Husband came home early because he had a dental appointment at 130pm. While he got a filling, I was visiting my friend while Youngestand her crew went swimming. I made arrangements for Husband to pick up Youngestat 430pm and I left at 330pm to pick up Eldest at the camp bus stop. The bus arrived at 4pm and Eldest and I went to Wawa to get her a quick snack and drink before our 445pm pedi appointment. We saw the pedi, got the ear infection diagnosis and three prescriptions (amoxicillan, ear drops and Singulair). I drove to the pharmacy, dropped off the scripts and was told I had a 45 minute wait. So, we went back to Wal-Mart and wandered around in there, killing time. We got back to the pharmacy at 6pm, picked up the meds, drove home and Eldest ate her dinner while I spoke with my Mom on the phone. She called right as we came home. Eldest took another breathing treatment and her meds while I prepared my dinner. I shoveled in my dinner and as soon as I was done, I got another phone call. While I was on the phone, Husband told the girls they could go swimming. So, they got ready and I finally finished my call. I sat outside and watched the girls and Husband in the pool and decided that *I* wanted to go swimming too! I got my suit on and we all goofed around in the pool for about 20 minutes. I got the girls all finished with their showers amd now I am typing this entry out, still in my bathing suit.

If you've hung in there with me, God bless ya. I don't know how I survived today either. I need a drink.

Posted by Cate at 08:30 PM | Comments (3)

Early!?

Eldest starts camp today. So, guess who had to get up early? That's right. Me. I've been so spoiled for the past couple weeks - sleeping in and enjoying lazy mornings.

Not for the next two weeks.

I've actually got to get up and get out of bed. It's like I'm practicing for back to school in September. Youngestalso has swim lessons for the next two weeks as well. I will be busy busy busy. I also get to pick up the latest Janet Evanovich book - Eleven On Top - from the library. I can't wait to read it!

I've got to go - catch ya later!

Happy Birthday

Today is Eldest's nineth birthday.

I can't believe she is nine. NINE. I look at her and think about how lucky I am to have her as my daughter. I love her so very much. She has made me one very proud mama. She's smart and funny and is incredibly caring and thoughtful.

Happy Birthday baby. I love you.

I know she would be thrilled if people wished her a happy birthday so as a huge favor, today, could all you fine people out there leave a birthday comment for her?

Thanks!

Thank goodness we went to the beach yesterday. Today - it doesn't look so good outside. I have a ton of things to do today, including baking a birthday cake and making the icing. Eldest wants a sheet cake decorated like the American flag. I can do that. Piece of cake.

Heh. Piece of cake. I crack myself up.

I've got to stop at the supermarket for party snacks (chips, pretzels, etc) and also need to stop at the butcher to pick up my deli meats.

So, enjoy the pictures of us at Point Pleasant boardwalk and I'll catch up with you later.

We had a most excellent time at the boardwalk and beach today. The girls are heading into bed right now. I will try to post pictures later.

We're outta here!

The girls and I will be heading out to the boardwalk/beach in a bit. I've got to run around, get things ready and drag their butts out of bed!

Have a great day!

Sore

Did I mention that both of my shoulders are killing me? I guess from all the pulling on the trampoline springs must have really done a number on me. Seriously, I can't reach behind to scratch my own back or put on a bra. Owies. Luckily, I devised a way to put on a bra which was very much like the way I used to put it on when I was twelve.

I should be doing stuff around the house but I just don't feel like it. Maybe today can be "Lazy Day". Yeah, I think that works for me. Tomorrow we will be spending the day with one of my awesome sis in laws. Thursday, Mom will be down and Friday, the girls and I are going to the horse track with another one of my awesome sis in laws. Friday is Eldest's 9th birthday and Saturday will be her pool party for all her buddies.

I've got one fun-filled week planned!

Fireworks

We just got back home from an awesome fireworks show. The girls had a great time. I tried to take some pictures of the fireworks - I wonder if they turned out.

Anyway, I stink like bug spray. LOL. Off to shower!

Trampolines

Husband and I are putting up a trampoline today.

Holy crap - hooking the mat to the springs is hard. My hands are killing me. Plus, it's freakin' hot today too. Now I am sweaty AND dirty.

Eww.

Checking in

I'm alive!

I've been so busy that I've neglected my poor lil old blog. Sorry to all you fine people who've been checking in on me.

Husband's been reassembling a rather large trampoline for the girls. We picked it up free from the sister of a friend of a friend. FREE! Of course, we needed to take it apart. In her backyard. Her seriously tree-filled and pollen covered backyard. Ew. But, It's a full size trampoline with the net sides. It would have cost me about $500 to purchase brand new. I'm not picky. I will gladly take gently used stuff. The trampoline was in pretty good shape, just some slight rust on the bolts and poles. Husband sanded off all the rust and is [planning in priming and painting the steel supports. Between the trampoline, the pool, the addition and the swingset, my backyard is going to be pretty darn full!

Off to play. See ya!
