I'm Gonna Knock You Out.

I've got to say that, for once, I am inclined to agree with the governor. Good for him for sticking up for his wife. I seriously doubt that Codey was going to beat up Craig Carton.

N.J. governor confronts DJ over comments

TRENTON, N.J. -- Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey said Wednesday he threatened to take a radio show host outside after the shock jock made dismissive comments about postpartum depression, an ailment that has afflicted first lady Mary Jo Codey.

Codey said NJ 101.5 should take action against the talk show host, Craig Carton, and defended Tuesday's aggressive rebuke at the station's Ewing Township studios.

"Somebody made disparaging remarks about my wife. I defended my wife like any man or husband would," Codey said. "I have a right to defend my family, and I will."

Codey denied an account in The Star-Ledger of Newark that said he told Carton during the altercation: "I wish I weren't governor, I'd take you out."

"I didn't say I would take him out," Codey said. "I said I would take him outside. When you're Irish you take them outside, not out."

According to the account from a Star-Ledger reporter who witnessed the confrontation, Carton responded: "That's real professional. You want to fight?"

Codey and Carton then shouted at each other before Carton left the station and Codey went on to appear for his monthly "Ask the Governor" call-in show.

Codey said he was upset about remarks in Carton's "Jersey Guys" show on Monday.

According to a partial transcript the governor's office said it received from a source, Carton said: "What Gov. Codey ought to do is approve the use of medical marijuana so women can have a joint and relax instead of putting their babies in a microwave. Then all they want to do is cook Doritos. Women who claim they suffer from this postpartum depression ... they must be crazy in the first place."

Citing station policy, program director Eric Johnson declined to release a tape or transcript of the show to The Associated Press.

The station on Wednesday posted a statement on its Web site saying it "is surprised and disappointed the Acting-Governor would propose violence as the solution to his dispute with one of our program hosts. Talk show hosts are, by nature, controversial. While we may not personally agree with their opinions, we defend their right to express them without the threat of physical harm."

On his show Wednesday, Carton said Codey had threatened to kill him and added that he would wage an on-air campaign to remove the acting governor from office unless he received an apology. He called Codey "an out-of-control, arrogant man."

"If I do not get an apology from him, and he owes me one, he will wind up the same way (former Gov. James) McGreevey did, which is out of office, based on the power of this show," Carton said.

Codey's office declined to respond to Carton's demand. "The governor is not dignifying the comments made on today's show with any further comments," said spokeswoman Kelley Heck.

Mary Jo Codey has publicly described her battle with depression and talked about the dark days after their first son was born 20 years ago -- times when she thought of drowning her child or placing him in a microwave oven. She said she knew she would hurt herself first.

Postpartum depression afflicts about 2 percent of women who give birth.

The acting governor has been a longtime advocate for improved care for the mentally ill and once worked undercover at a state psychiatric hospital to gather information to support his reform efforts.

Codey said his wife was upset by Carton's remarks. But he also described her resiliency: "My wife has survived mental illness, being in a coma for eight days, breast cancer, me at times, so I think she can survive this person."

I'm with the gov on this one- based on Carlton's tendency to, um, exaggerate and self-promote, I'm tending to not believe his take on the situation.

I'm all for guys sticking up for their wifes!
My husband is the champion of that crusade!

Hello!? Freedom of speech? We all know what this is, right?

You may not agree with what carlton says but to threaten to "take out" aka kill/cause harm to seems wrong to me. The fact that the govener of my state is the one who is threatening to do it makes the whole thing even more disturbing.

Posted by: annon at January 27, 2005 11:01 PM

Why can't anyone see the whole story here? First, his name is Carig Carton, not Carlton. Most people who have become "experts" have not listened up until this point. Do your homework. He never made a personal attack on Mary Jo. Cody was being a misinformed bully, not a hero. What is wrong with you people? Craig donated personally all the Playstations in the childrens ward at Robert Wood in New Brunswick. Call them and ask if he is a bad guy. Over the holidays, the Jersey Guy's raised $40,000.00 for needing families in NJ as well as having 25 christmas trees and dinners donated. If I am depressed and murder someone, I am a clod blooded killer. If a women does this after giving birth, it is post partum psycosis (not depression, look it up) and they become a saint. Cody is a bully and just as corrupt as the others in this state. He's from Essex, that should tell you something. Get a grip on reality people. He made a terroristic threat and nothing was done by the three troopers watching. This is corruption at it's finest. Craig did not make ANY personal attack to provoke this.

Hey Rick, get your spellings right before you blast other people for writing "Carlton". You spelled Codey "cody", you spelled Carton "carig", you spelled psychosis "psycosis". And Carton is a scumbag.

Freedom of Speech does not give you the right to be an idiot! Just because someone has the RIGHT to say something doesn't mean it should be said. Craig Carton has no class and it is obvious to anyone who listens to his station. Making donations to hospitals and needy families is wonderful, but it still doesn't make up for his nasty and obnoxious comments. Perhaps he donates to ease his conscience ??? In any event, kudos to Gov. Codey for speaking his mind. Now that he isn't running for Governor, I'd love to see his beat the crap out of Carton (and if he can't, I hope a few troopers jump in and help)!

Posted by: Nancy at January 31, 2005 12:57 PM

Craig is a jerk.
Have you ever listen to his show? Last time, I listened to it, he proposed the FBI to raid an islamic gathering and interrogates every single one of them as al Qaeda suspect. Hello !?!? What happens to due rights and innocent till proven guilty.

Craig Carton is jerk that only cares for his rights but have no sympathies for other people right. We call that selfish, BTW.

I do agree with Carton's other comment about preferring to have McGreevey back in the office.
McGreevey probably would have taken him out. I think they make a lovely couple don't you think?

I realize the point of a shock jock is to say outrageous things, but his comments about the Govenor's wife croos the line from "shocking" to "shockingly stupid."

Mr Carton displays is ignorance regarding the severe trauma that is mental illness, and knows nothing of the genuine "black dog of dispair"
(to use Churchill's phrase) that you descend into during depression.

Mr Carton needs to learn a little more about the chemical imbalances in the brain that cause depression before he shoots his mouth off about this serious topic.

In brief... Two Words: Not Funny.

and for a shock jock, that's bad for business.

and personally, I woudn't mind seeing him go from "Shock Jock" to "Socked Jock"

HEy Nancy, where were due rights and innocent till proven guilty on 9/11? And freedom of speech is an open policy. Free to say WHAT you WANT WHEN YOU WNAT. Not freedom to say what you want as long as x,y, and z agree. Why is it ok that you can watch a person being beaten with a metal bowl on CBS the other night but were not ok with a man expressing his opinion? I feel that anyone who has thoughts of putting a baby in a microwave is in need of serious treatment no matter what the reason. Get a grip here.

I *used* to listen to Carton and Rossi every night on my way home from work (I'm a listener way back to the Domiski (sp?) and Doyle days. But I have finally switched stations in disgust. This week, he is STILL going on and on about the whole thing, about demanding an apology, etc etc ad nauseum. I am sick to death of hearing about it from him, he's starting to sound like a whiny child. Talk about beating a dead horse!

I really like Jim Gerhardt much better. Even if he doesn't agree, he does it in a courteous way. I like debate, I don't like arrogance. Everyone calling in has just as much right to their opinion as Carton does - and yet when one man called in once about how depressed he was over his newborn son's serious health problems (unrelated to and way before the Codey incident), he simply played PacMan sound effects over the caller! Maybe he didn't want to hear what he had to say, but perhaps the listeners would?? Arrogance.

God help you people..yes GOD help you people...each and every one of you people that are saying how wrong he is for what he said considering that 1) the comment wasn't even dircted specifically at codey's wife or any "ONE" person for that matter although the facts Carton stated was 100% true about women;2) those who are saying he was wrong and you didn't hear it 1st hand but by heresay, you are ridiculous; 3) I have listened to Carton and Rossi since the day they started. I don't know how they couldn't possibly do a better job entertaining, or further more be honest with the public instead of being politically correct like most everyone else who are afraid of the backlash. Carton has more class in his one pinky finger than most people have throughout their bodies. Last but not least, for all of you who choose to jump the band wagon and bad mouth Carton instead of standing with him for what is right, you are losers..and I for one would be willing to stand side by side with Carton for 99.99% of what he says...I do not agree with everything, but usually and this time being one of those times, I believe he is 100% correct and I also hope the "Mr. potato head" Governor Codey is forced to step down in shame.

I am Dicks Cousin. I think he's and asshole. His wife tryed to microwave my kid and blame it on the drugs she was taking. I said "Hey, you are sad cause your not allowed to be fat anymore after having your kid" Then she said "i have a disease" Then i says "There is no need for funding to research your disease, the only reason your hubby wants to get funding for that is so he can get tight with the paharmacuetical companies" then she says "what do you mean?" then i says "When you are depressed you goto the doctor and ask him for help then he writes you a prescription before he even checks your blood" "Bitch, did you know that you can just take vitamin B-complex for depression and take part in stres relieving activities like walking" "No, i did not my doctor is form essex country and is part of my hubbys mafia friends network of scumbags" so i replys with "Oh, well i dont think thats an excuse. Doctors these days should just rely on the facts of medicine and make healthy suggestions and reccomend vitamins and healthy activities. Cause researching depression is for the psychologists and psychiatrists. Not the tax payers money." Then she says "damn you shut me up pretty good, i guess im just trying to get attention and lobby money to my husband cause we uhh poor, or i mean not rich enough..to run for governor.. we was just thinking we make up a political topic since our democrat forefathers have ruined any chance of us ever fixing the budget or any real problems." so i says "Damn right bitch I am glad i am not a cousin on yourside, otherwise i would have to had chopped down my family tree with you hanging in it. I belive that you democrats have done nothing positive for this state and Craig Carton is spekaing for the common man, not some insider payed off scumbag. He speaks for the people. the people damnit." Then she says "I'm gonna take you out"-- --"side.." "where we can talk like us irish are known for doing. you know they always coin as us the "Talking Irish". yes man I am out of here Dick Sucker" then i says "goodbye skank, got em'"

Posted by: Dick Sucker at February 7, 2005 10:41 PM

WOW, that Dick totally knows whats goin on. Too bad he can't spell well. I think he is correct in saying that depression can be cured by vitamins not our tax dollars. My mother had post pardum, and she took the b-complex vitamins in megadoses as suggested by her doctor back in 1983. And she stopped feeling stressed out and depressed from the overwhleming task of raising me and my brother. I think this idea of spending our tax money on researching something that is already cured is crap. My friend was put on Ritalin as a kid and he commited suicide after it caused him to form manic depression. Something he would have never gotten if the doctors wernt pushing speed to kids in the early 90's. I really believe that the problems are nutrition and sanity related.. So I completley agree with Carton's response to Dicks bitches comments on the subject and her stupid attempt to waste more of our tax dollars. The answer is simple take the money away from the doctors and pay them a teachers salary. And stop the drug companies from pimping their drugs. This quest for answers in a pill is sad. I lost a friend from pharmacuetical drugs that were used not to save lives but to interfere with child raising.. and thats just scummy.

Ayo, not for nothing, But yous need to lay off my pal Dicky C. Wes got what you may call a relations. He gets the cash flowing in the T town and we gets the cut for the pills for depression that uhh fall out de back fo the truck you know.. But hey, forget about it. You guys dont understand the complex situations of our business activities. Just vote my buddy Johnny Cor in so I's can keep puttin the pene on the table you know what i mean!? exactly

Posted by: Joey Bagadoughnuts at February 7, 2005 10:58 PM

Man that guy was soo Italian. I am scared the direction my states goin in if him and the essex county democrat crime bosses are running it. Shiit, I'd move out but you know i got kids. Well I hope they figure this out, and shut up that Craig guy. If he keeps telling the people the truth people are gonna start riots or get stressed out and suffer from anxiety..

I'd just like to say that Craig Carton is a pompous ass who thinks that his poop doesn't stink. What he doesn't realize is that his show does! He and that Ray (smelly Ray as he was known on his past radio station) are about the worst people to take advice from. Craig tries to be the next Howard Stern but he comes as close as Rosie O'Donnell comes to being straight and a female. He claims his show has the best ratings in the country. Working in radio, I can tell you, he has the best ratings in his own mind, but he's clueless about how to read a ratings scale, let alone the telephone bill. He even tried to steal the whole Stern thing when his wife lost their baby - Carton had to use that same stint to gain ratings. He's a pathetic piece of white trash who's name shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Dick Cody. I hope Carton's wife has a nervous break-down and he sees how it is to deal with post partum depression. Living witht that piece of filth, that would certainly drive ME to drink!

For the most part, the entire radio station is filled with undertalented, self-important, no nothing talking heads. But by far, the C&R show is the most offensive. The guy is a 3rd rate Stern wannabe right down to stolen bits, Ms Jersey Guy, the on-air immigrant cleaning person, and worst of all, the cackling hyena Ray Rossi. Robin laughs at everything Howard says, but at least most of what Howard says is funny. I don't think I've ever heard Carton utter a single funny line. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they yank these morons off the air.
