My heart goes out to you...I just went through this with my father-in-law. My mother-in-law kept him at home until she had to put him into hospice. She wanted him to die at home but his care got to be too much for her and the 2 nurses that came to their home during the week. He was at the hospice, surrounded by family, for 8 days. He died October 12th. He was only 72. Life's just too short! My prayers are with you and your family.

These Things Shall Never Die

The Bright, The Pure, The Beautiful That stirr'd our Hearts in Youth
The Impulses to Wordless Prayer
The Dreams of Love and Truth
The Longing after somethings Lost
The Spirits Yearning Cry
The Striving after better Hopes -
These Things Can Never Die.

The timid Hand stretched forth to Aid
a brother in his need
The kindly Word in Griefs Dark Hour
That Proves a Friend Indeed
The Plea of Mercy softly Breath'd
when Justice threathens nigh
The Sorrows of a Contrite Heart -
These Things Shall Never Die.

Let nothing pass, for every hand
Shall find some work to do
Lose not a chance to waken Love
Be Firm, and Just, and True
So shall a Light that never Fade
Shine on thee from on High
and Angel Voices say to Thee
The Things Shall Never Die.

- Dickens

My deepest sympathies. :(

Kate, I stumbled in here from a link on a blog I surfed to in blogexplosion.com. I just wanted to let you know that I am sorry for your loss. We've lost two family members recently too, and the pain is so visceral, so deep, it feels like it will never go away. I doesn't really. It just dulls with time. Give yourself room to grieve.

Posted by: shannonblogs at October 22, 2004 03:00 AM

I am so sorry, the note brought tears to my eyes, you see, both my daughter and I are very close. I hope to be there for her for many years to come.
Sometimes things don't work out, so if anything happens to me, I can only hope she (nicole) practices what I have attempted to teach her over the years. I know, your Dad would want the very best and nothing but the BEST for you. Do your best and follow your goals.
