Need some expert advice

I was looking at sewing machines in WallyWorld today. I can't sew clothig but I would like to sew on Girl Scout patches, maybe whip up an easy curtain, sew on a button... easy stuff. I am at a loss at to WHAT to look for in a sewing machine. Can anyone who sews give me some advice?? PLEASE??

Ooh! Yay.

Ok, don't buy plastic. Buy something with an easy-working bobbin. I personally like Singer. If you have ideas, email them to me and I can help you out.

I have a Singer sewing machine, but I actually do sew. Something like mine probably would be overboard for you. However, I am also a firm believer in not buying anything plastic unless you want your machine to vibrate itself right off the table. The heavier the better.

By the way, a sewing machine is incredibly inconvenient for sewing on a button. It's way faster to do it by hand.

My mom's got a Viking that she got at least 20 years ago, more likely 30, and I still use it all the time. If you can find a used one, it'd probably be a lot cheaper and it'll last for eons. (If you REALLY want longevity and quality, my great grandma had a Singer with a foot treadle, absolutley no motor! She used it for at least 60 years, up until the day she died, and it's still going strong.)
