Insane
My Mom wants a new computer. P and I have been shopping around for her, looking for a good deal. We checked on Dell's site as we have purchased several computers from them before. There were some awesome deals for a computer like double the memory, free cd/rw drives, free all-in-one printer.. all that fun stuff. The bonus - we did not need a monitor. She already has an LCD monitor. Sweet. We can save some bucks here. We configured a decent system and updated everything. The price came to under $600. Not bad at all. The shipping was $110 dollars!! WTF is THAT all about?? I dial their 800 number listed ever so obviously on the website. I play the touchtone game. I was on hold, waiting for a "representative" to help me when I get a recording telling me that the department I am trying to reach is closed!!! Dell is CLOSED on a Friday night?? I thought "No way!" and redialed the phone, listened carefully (again!) to all the telephone options and got transferred. I get the recording again! Well - BUH-bye Dell. You lose!
I ended up at HP's site and I managed to customize a sweet system PLUS there is free shipping and free hard drive upgrades as well. I have to call Mom in the morning and see what she wants to spend.
Heading off to bed. See you in the morning! ::hugs and kisses:: G'night!

The ubiquitous long phone call to Dell! It must have been quite annoying. It also amazes me at the price of shipping.
As a side note, my wife and I just purchased a new printer/fax/scanner/time machine all in one device and we got it at a reasonable price. Yet, to replace the ink cartridges is just $40 less than the price of the printer!!! It is almost worth buying an new printer each time!
Cheers!

That is insane on the shipping. HP isn't bad. My sisters tower is an HP. 256 RAM, cdrw/dvd tons of extras. She loves it but of course, I am constantly having to go clean it up for her. She has no idea how to use spyware removal tools or even defrag. Gah. Good luck girl. :)

I really like my HP's.....that's my choice of brands. :-)

That $110 for shipping is ridiculous! Crap!
And as for the trolls, they piss me off. They are total cowards who have to spread their hate and discontent to innocent people. They need to get a life.
Hope you all have a great weekend!

I have a Dell laptop (it was my graduation gift) -- have no idea what they charged for shipping. I had to call Dell a few months after I got it (the power supply stopped working) -- around 10 pm on a Friday night -- and I think I sat on hold for 30 minutes before I finally got someone.
Then the guy (who spoke very little english) told me that I needed to calm down. Oops. I was so mad by the time I hung up the phone. I ranted and raved for days.

Give IBM a call too. If you tell them you are looking at Dell they will give you a pretty sweet deal. The only drawback is that they ship their systems with Lotus Suite instead of Microsoft Office. If that's not an issue, you can really get a quality PC with excellent support for nearly the same price.
We stopped buying Dell where I worked and starting buying IBM. We just bought a new P4 2.66 GHz machine with 40GB, 256 MB for $855. I can build one cheaper, but the support, reliability and the fact that it's preloaded is well worth it. IBM might have a harder time competeing with the consumer market, but give them a consider.

should have asked me... I just bought a dell. It was cheaper to build AND ship via small business... I saved $400 on my laptop building it the exact same way!!

My two cents (CDN$) on the Dell thing. I have three and an Axim and think they're quite nice. I don't get why the shipping for you is so much. It's $50 per box to ship up here so with the exchange rate we get a deal I guess. I don't think you did wrong with an HP though, IBM are also good options. Chances are when you call for tech support for any of the brand name pc's you'll be calling Mumbai, India. Dell Canada already calls there. Our internal help desk is moving there from Calgary, Alberta. It's hard to compete when they pay the folks over there so much less than what our lowest paid techs are paid.

I recently bought a Dell back in August, and I love it. Tons of great stuff on the inside. It does suck with the shipping BUT sometimes they run a free shipping promo (that's how I got mine). Not sure when they'll run it again, but if you can afford to wait it out, I'd do it.
